Albright, our iron angel

BY YLLI POLLINA LEKA On the eve of the visit by the American envoy to the land of the Albanians, the humanitarian scenario of Skopje, Belgrade and Athens has been cut off once and for all. Because otherwise! Madeleine Albright has recently politicized the Albanian reality. She has turned her gaze to the latest events, assessing them lucidly, as if seeing the scene for the first time. The latest events must be viewed from another angle. Warm hospitality must be preserved and wise people must be respected. Memory is a rare and very important human quality. Within it comes the constant anxiety of losing it. More often than not, ordinary citizens are jealous of politicians’ memories. At every table they “forget” that one is stretched toward the greatness of the other, that one is distinct through power and the other is “illiterate” in relation to the first. If before Madeleine Albright people, politics, the police, the opposition, and governance as they should be were still laughing, whispering, making blunders, keeping or announcing scandals, a brief notice of her arrival is enough for every mask to fall. Sometimes they say that Albanians are democratic, that they are in favor of democracy; sometimes they say they were freer and fiercely anti-communist and “wonder,” saying that no crimes have been committed in Albania and, for example, claim that things “happen,” while no one asks whether they were free and fiercely anti-communist. They are not. Madeleine Albright is the woman of the world. She is a “hurricane” who has brought to Albania an America without which nothing can be done. Without her, after all, there would be no Kosovo. And it is not only that the “guardian angel” and the American lady comes with many gifts. But she will come with a knife. I hope it will be bitter for each one of us. Only then can it save us from ourselves. [The text of the lower part is partially unclear and cut off in the photo.]
