On Wednesday, in front of the Socialist headquarters and its party apparatus, a break is expected. Most Albanians were convinced that the fierce quarrels between the two well-known political figures, whom they follow closely, would continue. Last Tuesday, the country's parliament approved laws that gave the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament the authority to substitute for the Party Chairman in his absence. This time the leader of the Socialist Party stepped back not only for reasons, but also because a powerful group in the party presidency had endured with resistance the prolongation of the endless conflict between Nano and Meta. Nano and his socialists, who during more than a year in government have clashed mercilessly with the opposition, showed no calm at all on the eve of such a solution. Meta and his supporters know that submitting a resignation is not enough to fully regain control of the party. Accompanied by the public-order police vehicle and by heavy security forces, Nano was accompanied by two branch chairmen, representatives of the women's and youth forums, former ministers and MPs. This move followed two days of internal party clashes, which had begun with disputes over names and posts. Nano had asked Meta to state clearly his position on continuing the reforms, on the timing of the congress, and on the role of the government. Meta considers it necessary to change the top leadership team, while Nano still sees himself as the main figure of the left. He is not afraid of a temporary loss of influence, but he is aware that time is not working in his favor. In the Socialist camp, besides accusations and counter-accusations, the new balance of power is also being calculated. In Tirana's political circles, it was widely commented that Nano's temporary departure would open the way for Meta. Nevertheless, some socialists continue to believe that Nano remains the symbol of the party. Others think that government needs calm and that the prime minister should have a free hand. This is also why many of them say: better Meta than Nano at the head of the Socialist Party.
