Three years ago, when the Socialist Party and its allies came to power, most Albanians were convinced that many things Sali Berisha had destroyed would be “put back in order.” There is no doubt that such an illusion had influenced the election results, in which people from the Democratic Party, too, cast their votes for Nano and the Socialists. Thanks to the authority built up through an overwhelmingly convincing victory, it was thought that Nano, by following the practice of the “iron fist,” would quickly put things right. In fact, opposition leader Berisha, finding himself in the most difficult position of his political career, did not fail to warn his associates to prepare for a long stay in opposition. However, from the very beginning of his time in power, Nano showed himself to be a leader and politician who does not keep his word. Under the guise of “liberalism,” “democracy,” “separation of powers,” “power-sharing,” etc., Nano stripped himself of every kind of authority that came with being Prime Minister and party chairman. Just 13 months of his government would be enough to show that Nano was an example of a politician incapable of turning words into deeds. During this period, Nano was defeated in almost every battle, culminating in his unconditional surrender after the events of 14 September. For this reason, the period following his victory at the last congress, which brought him back to the helm of the Socialist Party, was a decisive test of whether Nano had learned his lesson. If the Socialist leader had shown resolve by insisting on implementing his platform, backed by the votes of the congress delegates, this would have definitively established him as the historic leader of the largest political force on the left. The opposite would mean Nano saying goodbye, once and for all, to the role of leader. Unfortunately for him, however, developments so far point to the latter. Specifically, so far Nano has proved entirely incapable of putting into practice what the Socialists voted him in to do. But given the country’s political situation, with Berisha approaching power amid the collapse, the Socialists no longer need a “fragile” and devious leader like Nano. The Socialist Party and its electorate now need another leader, one who is more resolute, more authoritative and, ultimately, capable of turning words into deeds and making promises a reality. Only a politician with such qualities could stop Berisha’s headlong rush toward power. Judging by his activity as Prime Minister over these past months, it can be said that Meta is the politician the Socialist Party needs at its helm today. On the other hand, given the existing relations among the various groups within the Socialist Party, Meta can be considered the only figure capable of preserving genuine unity in the party, while also being highly resolute in his ideas. He—Meta, that is—is at least persistent in his work, whereas Nano was more suited to being a Minister of Culture than chairman of the Socialist Party. Ordinary Socialists who suffered under Berisha’s regime want justice for the period of the Democratic Party and prosperity under the Socialist Party. But their current leader, Nano, has given them neither.
