This grave event cannot pass without accountability. It shows the weakness of the state in the face of violent groups and creates a dangerous precedent for the future. If kidnappers are tolerated today, tomorrow every institution may be challenged. Citizens have the right to expect determination, professionalism, and respect for the law from the police. Any retreat in the face of pressure from the street is a blow to the rule of law and to public safety.
