BY ENTON ABILEKAJ The great joy of Berisha’s opponents at his being barred from entering Kosovo was the only reaction heard yesterday. The Albanian government joined in the celebration Kushner generously provided, and did not make even the slightest effort to ask Kosovo’s provisional administration about the incident involving the opposition leader and former President—not even out of curiosity. The opposite was true of Kosovo’s politicians, who showed no pleasure at all over Kushner’s refusal to let Berisha in. In the same way, no Albanian is happy when a compatriot is turned back at Kakavija after trying to enter Greece for work. But politicians from the governing parties were pleased with what happened and immediately called the press to share their impressions of this ugly event, which in fact harms Albania alone. Berisha’s return was a finger-pointing at Albania as a factor destabilizing Kosovo. Kushner points to the Kosovars’ compatriots, thus raising an accusation that could do great harm to Albania’s role in the region. It will be very difficult to counter the denunciation by Kosovo’s administrator with official statements that Albania opposes extremism and supports stability in the UN protectorate. Berisha’s return from Kosovo as a source of unrest finally creates a clear image of another world, where the same political and state rules as those here do not prevail, and where stability is the most important word. It is a world being built by democratic countries, a task undertaken directly by representatives of those countries.
