The blood-feud avenger waits to kill another child

Near the end, but not finished, the human ordeal of the Xhani family is again before the public, a family already condemned for 14 months by the Pjetrushi clan in Dukagjin. Saved for four days from revenge, 11-year-old Halil Xhani, killed at midday on 15 June, has turned the terrible odyssey of what happened to the Xhani family into the painful tragedy of this family's life story; not infrequently their days break against the walls of the tower where the wounded alive live. And the prospect of their son returning to the school bench will not bring happiness again. The bitter life in confinement may perhaps have begun with the first order to kill one of the Xhani family children, but not infrequently it is shown more vividly afterward, as the ordeal that has followed the family became that way. As soon as Halil was killed by a blood relative, the course of this family's days has once again become more dangerous. His mother and her seven children will continue to live out the terror while seeking help from afar. Thus, in the remote village of Dukagjin, where their village lies among the hills, people now hear, just as they themselves painfully sense, the burden that awaits another child to fall upon him. Amin, the brother about whom Koha Jonë writes today, tells how he spends his days at home. He is a 13-year-old boy, locked in the tower for a long time, and says he has been told by the blood-feud avenger that he will kill him too. Separated from suffering, the children's mother, who has not yet recovered from the pain of her murdered son, is torn between the fear of losing another child and the hope that the state will intervene. In the midst of this bleak picture of endless revenge, Albania at the end of this millennium seems to continue confronting wounds that do not heal. page 9
