Two political matches are being played across the country, but especially in the north of the country. Most of all it is a battle of nerves between Nano and Berisha, and the fiercest confrontation seems likely to take place in one of the hottest cities in the country, Bajram Curri. But the Nano-Berisha comeback, the two men persecuted under communism in government by Fatos Nano, resembles more a mandate of cooperation with Sali Berisha, unacceptable to many members of the Party of Labour. This may be so paradoxical and involves candidates, old contributors to power, while Berisha, covering Tirana and the north, has put on the jacket of the campaign. It may be fatigue, he may have softened excessively; it is completely different either from the Union of Albanians with Balli Kombëtar, or from the coalition with the legalists and democrats who took part in government with Berisha, after leaving after 13 months of the mandate. Now he is announcing the union of the democrats with the other right-wing allies. This has nothing to do with the stance on Kosovo, but with Nano’s need to bring back into circulation a right-wing card that he still has open. Berisha, covering Tirana and other centers, has not been willing to give up Tropojë, but meanwhile he is avoiding it from the campaign map. Nano intends to go there and challenge him politically. At stake is not only the north, but also its powerful symbols. Tropojë and Kukës have become the two emblems of the campaign.
