Joint statement of the Democratic Party and the Democratic League of Albanians in Croatia

The delegation of the Democratic League of Albanians in Croatia, led by Mr. Azem Vllasi, paid a visit yesterday to the central headquarters of the PDSH. During the conversation with the chairman of the Democratic Party, Dr. Sali Berisha, both sides exchanged views on the current situation in Albania, Kosovo, the former Yugoslavia and beyond. Albanians on both sides of the border will be better represented in the new political structures and in the life of the countries where they live. The Albanians' demands for their national rights, with democratic and peaceful content, are part of the processes for the full democratization of society and of relations among nations in the Balkans. The parties condemned the use of force and violence against Albanians, as well as attempts to equate their legitimate demands with extremism. Both sides expressed support for further political and cultural cooperation, as well as for better coordination of the democratic activity of Albanians wherever they live.

STATEMENT

The Greek consul exerted pressure on employees of the "Stalin" textile combine to appear at the branch office of his consulate, where they were given leaflets with irredentist content sponsored in the name of Omonia. Specifically, groups of workers who appeared at the branch office of the Greek consulate have reported the distribution of materials that undermine the territorial integrity of our country and coexistence among citizens. These materials, which bore the Omonia symbol, propagated a political line that ran counter to the national interests of the country. We call on public opinion to remain calm and not fall victim to provocations. We hold the relevant authorities responsible for taking immediate measures to stop these actions and to guarantee the free and democratic conduct of the electoral process. NATIONAL LIBRARY

QUESTION MARKS OVER A NOTICE

(For inclusion in intended deliveries) Plates: E. Miarka For two days in a row, the Omonia associations, the Ioannina Center and Këlcyrë, declared that through a circular of theirs they were calling for participation in activities that cannot be considered normal in the current political climate. In their notice it was said that people from the villages of the south should present themselves to take part in a rally. Such invitations, at a highly delicate moment for the country, raise many questions about their intentions and background. In a situation where the country is going through a decisive period, any move aimed at aggravating interethnic relations or undermining public peace must be viewed with great care. It cannot be accepted that the name of cultural associations is used for political aims that run counter to the national interests of Albania.

HOW CAN 100 YEARS OF HISTORY BE BLOCKED?!

Our opinion neither has the time nor the opportunity to continue dealing with accusations and counteraccusations among political forces; but certain phenomena catch our attention and cannot be passed over in silence. Just as steps toward pluralism have been undertaken, it is unacceptable to attempt to block an entire national history, even by treating it in a one-sided manner. We believe that reason, not partisan passion, must prevail in public debate. The history of the Albanian people neither begins nor ends with a single period. (Continues on page 2)

Petition to the Chairman of the Presidium of the People's Assembly

Petition Chairman of the Presidium of the People's Assembly We, the citizens of the Vlora district, address this petition to the relevant authorities to request a reassessment of certain issues related to citizens' right to free expression and democratic organization. Recently, in our city there have been observed actions that hinder the normal development of political activities and public gatherings. This is contrary to the spirit of the times and to the citizens' demands for pluralism. We ask the relevant authorities to take measures to guarantee constitutional order, respect for political freedoms, and to ensure that no forms of pressure are used against citizens because of their beliefs.
