The key to any unblocking is the basis for the population to grow and overcome the spirit of fear in order to oppose intolerable power. Democracy is established first and foremost through political pluralism. This requires that the conditions of civil society and the rule-of-law state be created in Albania, conditions that so far have been absent. This is accompanied by successive blows against the Democratic Party and the free press, in order to make the consolidation of the opposition impossible. For the continuation of the democratic process, it is essential not to hinder the activity of democratic forces and to abandon the old methods of political struggle. What is happening is not only harmful to the DP, but an attack against the interests of the nation. If this continues, the country’s future will be seriously endangered. The Albanian people need calm, security, and hope, not slander, fabrications, and political pressure. (Continued on page 6)

Interview with Mr. XHEVDET ALIU, concerning his historical book “Skënderbeu” Dear Mr. Aliu. You have published 12 works. This latest work of yours is a national work. It presents the figure of Skanderbeg in broad terms. What prompted you to write this book? — First of all I want to say that history is not made by one person, no matter how great he may be. History is made by the people. Skanderbeg is the highest figure of our national resistance, but he could not have been who he was without the Albanian people, without their struggle and sacrifices. My book aims to bring a fuller and more substantiated perspective on the era of Skanderbeg and on the role of the Albanian people in that period. (Continued on page 6)

Approval of the land law - an important event in history (Continued on page 6) The approval by the People’s Assembly of the law “On land” is an important step in the democratic reform of the countryside and in the creation of the legal foundations for the privatization of land. This law puts an end to the old property relations and opens the way for the development of a market economy in agriculture. The law aims to give the land to those who work it and to create conditions for increased agricultural production, the improvement of rural life, and greater interest in work. However, its implementation requires care, fairness, and transparency, so that conflicts and abuses can be avoided. The experience of other countries shows that agrarian reform is a difficult but necessary process. Albania cannot remain outside this historical development. (Continued on page 6)
