- Unfortunately, the PS will remain a party without a brain - The immediate support given to the manifesto of 182 intellectuals shows that the mind, the intellect, the brain of the nation is with the opposition. No party, whatever it may be, can “take” intellectuals by force simply because it absolutely must have them in its ranks. Despite the PS’s mad desire to have distinguished and reputable people as members, the fact is that such people left it long ago. And consequently, when the brain does not work, the body must die. This conviction is all the stronger when one hears that the PS’s “brain” cannot understand the message of peace and mutual understanding in the manifesto of the 182 intellectuals. ANACHRONISM THE PS PREACHES DEFEATISM AND DEATH - The end of communism is the same as the nation’s demise. A mummified party cannot guarantee any future - In one of its recent articles, “Zëri i popullit” makes the great discovery that in Albania “time itself has stood still and everything is heading toward death.” In Albania, in reality, time is moving at an unimaginable speed; in a little more than a year, decades that stifled the spirit and thought, and economic and cultural development, are being cast aside. A fatal balancing act that ultimately raises the question: “Are we becoming stronger or disintegrating as a nation?” They continue to “forget” that the nation has existed and will continue to exist regardless of the ideologies that represent or are imposed upon it, regardless of state systems and regimes. Speculating about the nation’s fate has been the demagogues’ favorite weapon for stirring up confusion and presenting the great achievements of our society on the road to democracy—and democracy itself—not merely as nonexistent but as harmful, and for portraying this road as a dark prospect. Thus, according to “Zëri i popullit,” in Albania “everyone shrugs their shoulders, as if the road we have travelled so far divides the leaders into two…”

To mark the close of the election campaign, today, 20.3.1992, at 16:00, a large rally of Tirana’s citizens will be held in “Skënderbej” Square. The leading figures of the DP and guests will take part. After the rally, a festive concert will be held, featuring the country’s best-known artists. - Message from Mr. Berisha’s meetings with residents of the Kavajë district - The people’s enthusiasm at these meetings was perhaps the greatest seen so far. The festive scene that unfolded made you think that the day of democracy’s victory over communism and socialism had arrived. Dozens of cars formed a convoy along the Kavajë–Rrogozhinë road, waving national flags and DP flags. The extraordinary atmosphere made it impossible to present these meetings in the form of a conventional report. For years, the people have awaited the day of freedom and the defense of their rights. And in these days the Albanian people of Kavajë, like all of Albania, want to express their faith and desire for the victory of the Democratic Party. The chairman of the DP, Mr. Berisha, held his first meeting in the village of Lekaj. His speech was accompanied by uninterrupted cheering and calls from hundreds of people: “Our votes are for you!” “Freedom! Democracy!” and so on. Mr. Berisha called on all honest villagers, and those misled by the PS’s slanders, not to repeat the mistake of March 31, but to vote for the democratic opposition, for themselves, their families, and all of Albania. At the end of the meeting, several villagers, in front of all the demonstrators, rejected the PS’s vices, an act greeted with cheers all around. Later, again in an enthusiastic atmosphere, Mr. Berisha held a special meeting in the village of Gosë, where hundreds of people once again gathered to hear the DP’s message, five days before the final victory. The rally was opened by the chairman of the Pluralist Committee, who then gave the floor to Dr. Sali Berisha. Among other things, the DP chairman said: The men, women, young people, and elderly of this country left the past behind and set out on a new road, the road of democracy. They left behind the class struggle and set out toward brotherhood and love for one another. The DP’s message has shown that those who were deceived by the PS on this road have abandoned that party. The DP guarantees that even those who do not vote for the DP on March 22 will still be our brothers on March 23. But, Mr. Berisha added, I have only one request: let them all welcome our victory. - Excerpts from the electoral program of the parliamentary candidate, God has been very generous with the Patos region. Its subsoil is rich in oil. Olive trees grow above ground. Cities and villages around the world that possess only one of these resources are among the most prosperous. Patos is mired in poverty. The region has 2,100 unemployed people and 2,000 applications for housing apartments. Its roots lie in oil, but it lacks heating and lighting. It produces 150,000 dollars every day, but funds cannot be found to build a bakery and provide water. This is the legacy of the years of dictatorship. The administrators of this colossal wealth never thought about the people of this region, but only about themselves. And what about democracy? Although it has already produced results in its early stages, the Patos region has 3,200 emigrants. Most are in Greece. There are also some in Italy and Germany. The young people returning from emigration have enlivened life here. 180 private vehicles travel the roads. Hundreds of refrigerators, washing machines, tape recorders, and other equipment have entered households. Trusting in democracy, and striving to make the Patos region independent of the Fier district, I have drawn up this electoral program. 1. Work is now under way to draw up foreign contracts for the exploitation of onshore oil. I will fight to ensure that every contract includes a clause addressing social issues. Foreign companies must undertake the construction of water supply systems in towns and villages, lighting and heating, and the development of tourist villages for oil workers and employees in other sectors of the economy. My aim is to ensure that the practice is not repeated whereby the granting of concessions to foreign firms was not accompanied by social requirements for Albania’s towns. 2. I will support the proposal of the Association of Albanian Oil Specialists to include offshore exploration as well. This is essential, because the revenue from extracting oil and gas at sea will provide the funds to develop the existing onshore technology. 3. By August 1992, I will establish links between the Patos region and four European cities: Ravenna (an oil center) in Italy; Kiel, a city in northern Germany; Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina; and Trikalla, a city in Greece. In the coming days, two employees of the Patos executive committee will travel to Trikalla to establish the first links with the municipality of that city. 4. By the end of March, two Turkish bakeries will be installed. A van for distributing bread will also arrive. Meanwhile, in cooperation with an Italian company, we will complete construction of the bread-baking oven. 5. In cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the necessary equipment has been secured for the abandoned maternity hospital in Old Patos. Also for Old Patos, an ambulance will be secured by April 1992.
