WELCOME WHITE DEMOCRACY
- Perhaps the greatest event in the history of our capital -
30 March 1992, 11:50 a.m.
Something magnificent cannot be expressed or conveyed through the written word. The seized moment allows only a sketch of this study as a trace. A wave of people, dense. The Boulevard 'Dëshmorët e Kombit' full as never before. From 'Skënderbej' Square to 'Nënë Tereza' Square, boys and girls, men and women, the elderly, the young, children. All as one body, one soul, waiting for the word, for hope, for change.
Delegations from the districts arrive one after another, with banners and flags. People cheer, applaud, laugh, cry. There are faces tired by hard life, yet brightened by faith. There are eyes filled with tears from the memory of suffering and from the joy of the day approaching.
Representatives of the Democratic Party take the stage. Sali Berisha is greeted with long ovations. The chants 'PD! PD!', 'We want Albania like all of Europe!', 'Down with the dictatorship!' run through the crowd like an electric current. His speech, sharp and clear, falls over the square like a rallying cry for free elections, for victory, for democracy.
This is not just a rally. It is a civic oath. It is the rising of the spirit of a people who have decided to part with the dark past. Tirana speaks today with one voice. And that voice is heard in every city and village of Albania.
People do not disperse quickly. They want to stay a little longer, to see one another, to be convinced that what is happening is real. In the air there is hope. There is determination. There is democracy.
APPEAL BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY PROF. DR. BERISHA
Faced with the popular enthusiasm and the greatness of all Albania, there is now no turning back. Another democratic victory will also be Sunday’s victory. All the hopes of this nation’s entire future are gathered in the free vote of 22 March.
Today and tomorrow Albanian citizens stand before the decisive days of their lives. Every vote for the Democratic Party is a vote for freedom, dignity, property, the market, the rule of law, and European integration. Every vote against violence, poverty, isolation and deception.
I call on all citizens, men and women, young men and young women, intellectuals, workers, peasants, soldiers, believers and non-believers: go out en masse to vote and vote for the number of the Democratic Party.
Let us make 22 March the day of the great break from the communist night. Let us open together the door of Albanian democracy.
Victory!
Tomorrow
mandate will thus become a bloc of votes that is a strong factor in the victory of the PD. Again this figure is likely to rise even higher, since in this neighborhood the known positions of the communists are to resist all together.
Tomorrow, on the day when this great battle ends, the communists will cease to be the masters of our fate. Tomorrow, Albanians will have the chance to choose freely. Tomorrow, no one will be able to take away their right to hope.
Tomorrow will be the day when citizens prove with their vote that the future is not built with fear, but with freedom. It will be the day when the old evil receives its strongest answer: popular rejection.
Tomorrow will be the day of the historic turning point.
