VOTES FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

-Mr. Eduard Selami in Kavajë and in Korçë- The people of Kavajë flooded yesterday and the day before yesterday toward the polling centers to collect their voting cards and stamps. This clearly demonstrated the citizens of Kavajë's confidence in the triumph of their political force, the Democratic Party. Thousands of citizens waited in line patiently, thus giving a fine lesson in civility to all those who claim to see nothing but anarchy in Albania. In Kavajë voting is taking place like in a normal country. Yesterday was also a significant day for the democrats of Kavajë, as Mr. Eduard Selami arrived there with a group of Democratic Party MPs. He met with hundreds upon hundreds of residents of this city, with intellectuals, students, teachers, artisans, and merchants. MR. SELAMI, for his part, after becoming familiar with the progress of the electoral process in the city of Kavajë and the surrounding area, stated that the elections are taking place in a calm and orderly manner, thereby refuting the slanders of PPSH. In his speech he stressed that the Democratic Party is the only force that can bring Albania out of the deep economic and political crisis into which communism plunged it. He praised the political maturity of the people of Kavajë and their faith in the democratic future of the country. THE DIRTY GAME that PPSH is playing to frighten voters and spread panic, Mr. Selami exposed with concrete facts. He called on citizens to vote massively for the Democratic Party, because only it is the guarantee of freedom, private property, and the rule of law. In Korçë Mr. Selami also held a warm meeting with voters. In his speech he said that 26 July will definitively seal the break with the communist past. He emphasized that a vote for the Democratic Party is a vote for Europe, for civilization, and for human dignity. At all meetings, citizens welcomed him with applause and expressed their determination to vote for the Democratic Party. (To be continued on page 2)

The justice of the law will come for the criminals

PRESIDENT BERISHA VISITED THE SOUTH - ENOUGH OF TUSHA'S CULT OF PERSONALITY - KRUJË Late on Saturday evening, the Albanian foreign minister, Mr. Sali Berisha, together with the deputy prime minister and minister of agriculture, Mr. Bashkim Kopliku, set off on a working visit to the South. Along the way they stopped in several towns and villages where they were welcomed by the people with enthusiasm. In his remarks, President Berisha strongly denounced the crimes of the communist dictatorship and promised that no one would be left untried. "The criminals will face the justice of the law," he declared. He stressed that Albania has entered a new era and that no one can turn the country back. In meetings with residents he called for the spirit of the cult of the individual to be left behind and said: enough of personality cults. The people, he said, must build democratic institutions and not new political myths. In Krujë he focused particularly on the need for order, calm, and work. The citizens welcomed him with support and cheers. (Photo DJAN KAFA) (To be continued on page 4)

Can the communists serve Kosovo?

In such cases, the time for observation and assessment remains short, while conclusions must be drawn calmly and responsibly. What is happening today in Albania is not merely an electoral contest, but a major moral and political test for the future of the nation. Albania and Kosovo are linked in their historical destiny. Every development in Tirana is followed with attention in Prishtina and in all Albanian lands. Therefore the question is rightly asked: can the communists serve Kosovo, precisely those who for decades left it in silence, who did not raise their voices in its defense, and who often used the national issue only for propaganda? The communists today are trying to present themselves as new patriots. But the people do not forget. Their silence in the face of Serbian violence is not forgotten, empty phrases are not forgotten, nor is yesterday's servility. Kosovo needs a free, democratic and strong Albania, not an Albania once again trapped by nostalgia for dictatorship. Only a democratic order can make Albania's voice heard in Europe and in the world. Only a government that emerges from free elections can dignifiedly defend the rights of Albanians wherever they live. Therefore the choice of 26 July has weight not only for Albania, but also for Kosovo. The Albanian people must vote with a clear mind. Every vote for democracy is also a vote for Kosovo. REFORM IN THE ARMY IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH NOSTALGIA

The first issue of the Armed Forces newspaper "Ushtria dhe Liria" came out yesterday. It got off to a good start with a broad overview of life in military units and with the promotion of new ideas for the democratic transformation of the army. At the same time, this newspaper strikes at communist nostalgia, a phenomenon that still seeks to keep the mentality of some old structures hostage. (To be continued on page 5)
