THE VICTORY OF PD MEANS A LOT TO ALBANIA, WHILE THAT OF PS ONLY TO ITSELF

THE VICTORY OF PD MEANS A LOT TO ALBANIA, WHILE THAT OF PS ONLY TO ITSELF Still as some months ago, the socialists try to create the idea that democratic governance will lead Albanians into general poverty. Weary of their old propaganda, they continue to make false comparisons between the past and the present, without taking into account the overall ruin they left behind in the country. The PD government found Albania on the brink of economic collapse. Empty warehouses, shut-down factories, a devastated countryside, a paralyzed market and people’s hopes almost extinguished. Under these conditions, the first step was to stabilize life and restart production. Instead of demagoguery, the democrats chose the path of reforms. Prices were liberalized, barriers to trade were removed, private initiative was encouraged and the foundations of private property were established. These measures brought temporary difficulties, but they were necessary to emerge from the inherited crisis. The PS tries to exploit every dissatisfaction in order to gain political points. But it does not speak of its own responsibility in the economic and moral catastrophe of the country. It remains silent about the years of isolation, poverty and repression that the system it defends under another name brought to Albania. The victory of the PD is not only a victory for one party. It is a victory for the rule of law, for the market economy, for opening to Europe and for the citizen’s freedom. When PD wins, Albania’s future wins. When PS wins, only its political apparatus wins. Therefore the choice is clear: no turning back, but moving forward. Albania needs reform, work and confidence. The democrats do not promise miracles, but a difficult and honest road toward recovery. DEAR VOTERS

The PD has one single goal: establishing a market economy in Albania. The PS has two goals: the first is to replace one thing with another, it is the overthrow of socialism. For socialism, the halfway point is therefore, change, the third goal will be born: to rise above one another that the PK lives, The change of communist society wake up AND TAKE IT!

A MORE SUBSTANTIAL CONTENT OF DEMOCRACY IN ALBANIA

Today, on the 30th day of the peace conference in Geneva, which is being held on the former Yugoslavia, it was decided that the talks would continue on Friday, over the weekend, and also on Monday. The reason for this was that the negotiations on the terms of the indictment had not yet begun. The world media has broadcast several demands from Croatia, Macedonia, and the Muslims of Bosnia for the drawing of borders, but no concrete proposal has yet been put forward. As for Kosovo, its representatives state that the bloc of foreign ministers from the Balkan region within the Council of Europe is exerting pressure to include the issue in the discussions as well. They say that there can be no lasting peace in the Balkans without a fair solution to the Albanian question in Kosovo and in other areas. Meanwhile today, in the Albanian parliament, the draft decision to elect Mrs. Nexhmije Hoxha as chairwoman of the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party was approved. In the same session, several other items on the agenda were also discussed. Within this framework, the Albanian government has emphasized that it will continue along the path of democratic and economic reforms, strengthening the institutions of the rule of law and of the free market. THE PD HAS CLEARLY PLANNED THE PATH OUT OF THIS DIFFICULT SITUATION

THE PD HAS CLEARLY PLANNED THE PATH OUT OF THIS DIFFICULT SITUATION On 19 June, a group of independent intellectuals, in the city of Durrës, organized a meeting with representatives of the Democratic Party. At this meeting, the most pressing problems of the transition and the ways to overcome them were discussed. The participants emphasized that the serious economic situation cannot be overcome with slogans, but with concrete measures, a clear program and political will. According to them, the PD is the only force that has responsibly presented a realistic project to lead the country out of the crisis. There was extensive discussion of privatization, the revival of agriculture, the creation of jobs and the attraction of foreign investment. It was pointed out that only a market economy can stimulate production and restore hope among citizens. The representatives of the PD declared that the reforms will be accompanied by social measures for those in need and that the government will fight corruption, abuse and old privileges. The importance of public order and the functioning of institutions was also emphasized. In conclusion, the participants stated that Albania is at a historical crossroads and that choosing the path of reform is the only guarantee of a better future. (continued on page 4)

“FATOS NANO PLAYS WITH LITTLE PUMPKINS”

JUST TO SEE AT NANO’S PRESS CONFERENCES - I “FATOS NANO PLAYS WITH LITTLE PUMPKINS” JUST TO SEE AT NANO’S PRESS CONFERENCES - I Ko? pre nënd nga na... [?] If he turned the pages from ... [?] if you noticed [?] that he did not stop talking, in a composed way, but with a certain dose of arrogance, he would surely convince you and create the impression that he was a man of culture, with arguments and political calm. But behind the chosen words and the calm tone lay the old content of demagoguery and denial of responsibility. Fatos Nano, in his public appearances, tries to present himself as a measured man, as a reformer and as a voice of reason. Yet when faced with concrete questions, he avoids answers, relativizes the facts and tries to turn debates into slogans against the government. He speaks about democracy, but does not speak about the role of his party in building the dictatorship. He speaks about the economy, but does not admit the failure of the model that brought poverty and isolation. He speaks about political morality, but remains silent about the privileges of the nomenklatura that still seeks to return to the scene. In Nano’s press conferences there is more theater than responsibility. There are more poses than arguments. There is more concern for image than for truth. And this is no coincidence; it is part of a strategy to cover the past with beautiful words. Albanians need clarity, not little pumpkins. They need programs, not wordplay. Politics can no longer be sustained with old deceptions served in new packaging. (continued on page 4)
