When will the Socialists defend themselves?

WHEN WILL THE SOCIALISTS DEFEND THEMSELVES? - "ZP" takes the motionists under its wing - One day after the initiative undertaken by the deputies of the Socialist parliamentary group to hold a debate in parliament, in which a full analysis will be made of the economic and political causes and consequences of the difficulties the country is facing and the ways and means of getting out of the current situation will be outlined, some press organs that have been giving daily coverage to the current problems of the country's political life have launched a discrediting campaign against this initiative, not hiding the background to this speculative campaign. These backgrounds are best seen in the article that the newspaper "Zëri i Popullit" published yesterday under the highly suggestive title "When will the Socialists defend themselves?". This is not the first time that this newspaper has taken on the role of defender of the government and of the president of the republic. Everyone remembers how zealously it had opposed the PS from the very beginning, this political force, on the eve of the 22 March elections, accusing it of being unrealistic and demagogic. Nevertheless, when the PS request for a parliamentary debate became public, "ZP" felt the need to appoint itself as counsel for Prime Minister Meksi and President Berisha. All the more so because public opinion can clearly see that the economic policy pursued so far is not only failing to pull the country out of the crisis, but is deepening it. The indicators of everyday life, the decline in production, shortages, unemployment, market disorder, as well as the growing dissatisfaction of various strata, are facts that cannot be covered up by rhetoric. These are precisely the issues that need to be discussed, not the opposition's initiative distorted as an act motivated by narrow political interests. The socialist newspaper has chosen not to deal with the substance of the request, but with the labeling of its initiators. It calls them "motionists" and tries to create the impression that we are dealing with a separate group aiming to destabilize the majority. In reality, the request for a parliamentary debate is normal in any democratic country and there is nothing extraordinary about it. Instead of explaining this to readers, "ZP" raises a smokescreen and shifts attention away from the essence. They are wasting their time trying to portray this move as an attempt to shirk responsibilities. On the contrary, the Socialist deputies are precisely seeking for responsibilities to come to light, for the causes of the crisis to be identified and for concrete ways out to be formulated. If anyone has reason to fear such a debate, it is not the opposition, but those who until now have preached successes and produced disappointments. It is regrettable that a newspaper of a party with a long tradition of work with the popular strata sinks to the level of petty jabs and misplaced irony. Instead of fostering a spirit of responsibility and analysis, it reduces the debate to a clash of labels. And so the question it raises in the title turns back on itself: when will "ZP" defend the real interests of citizens and not the excuses of power?
