Albanians in Albania, in the democratic movement, wish to move ahead toward Europe

Yesterday Mr. MIGUEL MARTINEZ, President of the Assembly of the Council of Europe, arrived in our country Today it is difficult to predict and accurately determine at what time Albania will become a full member of the European organizations. Nevertheless, it is completely certain that Albania's future is closely tied to the structures of Europe. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Mr. Sali Berisha, yesterday during a meeting with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Miguel Martinez, who is visiting our country. At the meeting held at the Presidency, President Berisha informed his interlocutor about the course of political developments in the country and the measures taken by the democratic government to overcome the difficulties inherited from the past. He outlined some of the problems Albania faces on its road to Europe, and first and foremost those related to the institutional protection of the country's northern and eastern borders. Sali Berisha said that during his conversation with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Mitsotakis, he had asked Athens to take seriously the issue of defending Albania's borders, as well as the rights of the Cham Albanians. President Berisha said that on this issue he found the understanding of Miguel Martinez, the President of the Assembly of the Council of Europe. President Berisha said that the Albanian people are making these sacrifices in order to enter the family of European nations as soon as possible, and not to enter the third world, which he absolutely does not accept. "Albanians are determined to move toward European democracy," President Berisha stressed. (continued on page 2)
