The State in Idea
We marked the 80th anniversary of the independent Albanian state, established in the hardest hours in the history of the Albanian people. Today, Albanian society, as always, in these important moments, values the Albanian state as the highest political form of its existence.
In the system of the Albanian people, the state has become a condition for national survival and political freedom.
For this reason, we must treat it not only as a legal and administrative institution, but as a historical idea. The Albanian state is the product of the centuries-old aspiration for self-determination and national affirmation.
The history of the Albanian people cannot be understood without this idea. For centuries Albanians have preserved their language, historical memory, and sense of belonging because they have kept alive the aim of having their own state.
This ideal is not only an emotional legacy. It is a political and cultural program that gives meaning to Albanian public life. Without the state, the Albanian people remain vulnerable in their freedom, their security, and their ability to develop.
In this sense, the state is not only an apparatus of power. It is the highest organization of the national will. Therefore, at all times, the defense of the Albanian state means the defense of our historical existence.
Today, as Albania is going through a period of major change, responsibility toward the state becomes even greater. Democracy, law, freedom, and justice cannot be built outside the state; they can take shape only through its institutions.
If we want our future, we must understand the Albanian state as a value, as an instrument, and as an objective. Only in this way does 28 November remain not only a glorious anniversary, but also a call to awareness, work, and responsibility.
The State of the Nation's Half
We see the return of the Albanian state to the borders of 1912 as a historical injustice toward the Albanian nation. The state of 1912 was a great victory, but not the final solution to the Albanian national question.
A large part of Albanians remained outside this state. This fragmentation of the nation has accompanied our entire century and has produced injustice, oppression, and a continuing political crisis.
When we speak of the Albanian state, we cannot forget Albanians in Kosovo, in Macedonia, in Montenegro, and in the other ethnic lands. Their issue is not an external issue; it is part of our national conscience.
The Albanian state, even when limited, remains the political and symbolic center of the nation. But it must not be understood as enough. It must be seen as a historical responsibility toward the totality of the Albanian nation.
For this reason, the 28 November holiday is at once joy and remembrance. Joy for the state that was created; remembrance for the part of the nation that has remained outside it.
Only a wise, democratic, and peaceful national policy can keep this ideal alive and turn it into a contemporary program.
The Albanian state must be open to this mission: to protect the freedom, dignity, and rights of Albanians wherever they live.
