PRESIDENT SALI BERISHA'S GREETING TO THE PERSONNEL OF THE “PELIKAN” OPERATION
The Albanian Prime Minister, Aleksandër Meksi, personally went to the place where law-enforcement officers seized and confiscated 1 ton and 200 kilograms of hashish. Part of this quantity of drugs is believed to be what was seized on 12 July of this year in Bari, Italy.
I warmly greet all the personnel of the police unit of Vlorë, the special RENEA unit, the border police of Sarandë, and the officers of the Italian Guardia di Finanza, who with courage, bravery and high professionalism dealt a heavy blow to the mafia gangs operating on the shores of our country.
I believe that your determination will continue to strike without compromise at every attempt at drug trafficking and smuggling and will restore to Albanians full confidence in the state, order and law.

President of the Republic
Hand in hand with Democratic Europe
- President of the Italian Republic, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro
- With the establishment of democracy, Albania will return to Europe with the force of its identity [?]
Today, within one year, our country has moved forward in political and economic pluralism, in the social sphere, and has found the path to democracy. For the first time in history, there is a government with the opposition majority. This means that we have entered the real democratic path. In the first two months of our government we made it possible to stop inflation and create the basis for a stable currency. In the months ahead we will create the foundations for the functioning of the market economy and normal capitalism. This means that the Albanian people are finally being separated from hunger. We are still far from the welfare and stability of Western countries, but we are moving toward them every day.
This was stated to journalists by President Sali Berisha during his last visit to Italy before leaving for Brindisi. He emphasized that economic growth is showing the first positive signs and that Albanians are beginning to feel the effects of the reforms.
The President of the Italian Republic, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, greeted the democratic developments in Albania and stressed Italy's support for our country. According to him, with the establishment of democracy Albania will return to Europe with the force of its identity.
He praised the role of intellectuals and writers in bringing Albania culturally closer to democratic Europe.
