— Not to appear in QC. Perhaps this letter to the magazine would also be called nothing other than a wonder, as has always happened before!
The truth is quite different. Among many spectacular events, which because of their size will tomorrow remain only in a few faint lines somewhere in the history of the nation, there are some that, though seemingly small, reveal their value and significance over time as being of particular importance. I would also call such the noble stance of 50 Albanian scholars who, for various reasons, mainly political, emigrated abroad, as well as their decision to return, despite the fog that still exists in the homeland. Among this group are names that are not easily forgotten in our scientific and cultural circles. If we were to mention them all, the list would be long. It is enough to say that with their return, the country gains a valuable intellectual potential. In the difficult conditions of the transition, as Albanian society is being reorganized and its institutions are taking shape, this decision has a special moral and national meaning. The return is not only a personal act, but also a sign of faith in Albania’s future. They are returning to contribute in universities, institutes, laboratories, administration and culture. If once departure had been imposed by harsh circumstances, today their return becomes a worthy response to the need for national reconstruction. This letter does not seek empty praise, but to highlight an example that should be valued. Instead of dwelling on gossip and misplaced labels, it would be more honest to understand the weight of such a decision. Albania needs its sons and daughters, especially those who have knowledge and experience. In this sense, the return of the 50 Albanian scholars is not an ordinary episode, but a piece of news of great importance. (ATSH)

Nexhmije Hoxha continues to keep treasures hidden

To also explain to the people the way the treasures were hidden, she has begun taking out of the bedroom drawer, where she had kept them hidden, documents such as the reply she gave to the honorary consul of Albania in Switzerland regarding the interest of our embassy in Bern in meeting her fugitive son Ilir. The document itself says more than Nexhmije herself wanted to say. She tries to present herself as a worried mother, but between the lines there emerge the way of thinking and the privileges of a family that lived above the law. Instead of giving explanations about the wealth, she seeks to divert public opinion’s attention with letters and partial clarifications. According to the author, this behavior cannot hide the truth. The matter of the treasures remains open and requires full transparency. Public opinion is interested not only in the history of the documents, but also in the source of the wealth and the way it was managed. In this context, any attempt to create a fog of information is doomed to fail. (continued on page 4)
FANIZ ALIA testifies in the trial of Nexhmije Hoxha
— the names he moved and the files where they were hidden, outside the logic of the judicial process — the names he moved and the files where they were hidden

Over the Albanian people there rose a savage and monstrous terror. His role after the staged trials against political defendants, death sentences, imprisonments and mass internments. From the beginning of the 1940s until the end of the communist regime, the state apparatus controlled by the top leadership exerted continuous repression. In his testimony, Ramiz Alia is presented as one of the figures who had knowledge of and responsibility for a series of political and administrative decisions. At the center of the article is his relationship to the case of Nexhmije Hoxha, the names he moved and the files that were hidden outside the logic of the judicial process. The author raises questions about the mechanisms for protecting the former elite and about individual responsibility for the crimes of the past. Referring to testimonies, he argues that the truth cannot be hidden behind procedural justifications. The full opening of the files and the clarification of everyone’s role are demanded. Only in this way, the article says, can an honest relationship be established with history and with justice. In the end it is emphasized that the trial has not only criminal importance, but also moral value for Albanian society. The discussion takes place within a broader demand for transparency and accountability. BEDRI HAZBIU
