What would I suggest to Mrs. NEXHMIJE HOXHA?! A memory that may also be useful to others I wonder whether this would not have been more beautiful for you: to offer a moral argument before public opinion and show everyone that you feel and bear responsibility for what we have endured for a long time, precisely for what we have suffered at the hands of part of the highest communist nomenklatura and for a dramatic Albanian period... Mrs. Nexhmije Hoxha! I had started this letter like all the others, with the usual formulas. But I immediately threw it in the bin. How was I supposed to address you? Your “Excellency,” “comrade,” or “madam”? To tell the truth, I did not know how to begin. I thought for a long time. Before me stood an elderly woman, a very well-known name in Albanian politics, but also a symbol of a time that has left deep wounds in this country. You are not an ordinary citizen. For many years you were at the center of power, one of the leading figures of the communist regime, wife of Enver Hoxha, part of the highest nomenklatura that decided the fate of Albanians. Perhaps, at this age, after everything that has happened, it would be more humane and more useful for yourself if you showed an apology, regret, a public reflection. Not to be humiliated, but to be morally freed. Wouldn't that be true proof of maturity? A sign that history, however heavy, can be acknowledged? That guilt is not erased by silence, but by speaking honestly? When you defend yourself with justifications, when you act as if nothing happened, you are not only defending yourself. You are defending a system, a logic, a legacy that brought this country prisons, internments, fear and backwardness. I do not know whether you will like this letter. Perhaps not. But I think a sincere word from you would be worth more than many political statements. (To be continued on page 2)

The rule of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship in Iraq, the destabilizing developments of this Saddamite dictatorial regime against all international laws and the free nations, as well as Turkey's state directives, have clearly exposed its intentions even after the defeat suffered in the Gulf War. This attack, ordered by Iraqi TV and under its direction, is a new criminal act by Hussein with serious consequences for peace. This is an irresponsible, condemnable and harmful act for peace and stability in the region and beyond. Yesterday's missile attack, undertaken against Iraq's military targets, is a justified response to the continued violations of UN resolutions and the obligations arising from international agreements. The Albanian state, our government and our people, supporting the efforts of the international community to preserve peace and security, condemn the adventurist actions of Saddam Hussein's regime and express solidarity with the allies in this position. Only in the name of its own existence can it prove success in opposition activity by seeking at any cost the destabilization of the country and the government. By speculating through every means, by stirring social discontent in every possible way, by recognizing no parliamentary or democratic norm, by openly coming out against democracy with such banal arguments, it offers revenge and a return to the past as an alternative. Instead of distancing itself from its totalitarian past, the PS tries to present itself as a reformist force, while obstructing every real reform and encouraging only conflict. In Vienna, an agreement was signed between Austria Albania on bilateral economic cooperation In Vienna, on Wednesday of yesterday, after talks held between the delegations of Austria and Albania, an agreement on bilateral economic cooperation was signed.[?] This comes within the framework of efforts to expand trade ties, investments and institutional contacts between the two countries. Representatives of the respective governments took part in the meeting and the importance of intensifying economic and financial relations was emphasized.
