Albania continues the path of democratic stabilization

In the daily report of 23 January, the U.S. Department of State has devoted special attention to Albania. Focusing on political and economic developments, the report by the American authorities considers our country a positive example in the region. The analysis underlines that in Albania, after the elections of 22 March 1992, a more favorable climate has been created for institutional building and for the consolidation of democratic processes. The report notes that although economic difficulties remain great, the Albanian government has taken important steps to stabilize the economy and to establish market mechanisms. It also mentions the effort to strengthen the rule of law and public institutions. The text emphasizes that Albania’s relations with the West are expanding and that the country is moving toward greater political and economic integration. According to the American assessment, Albania continues the path of democratic stabilization.

REBUTTAL PSD supports the government and the REFORM Message from the meeting between representatives of the PD and PSD Tuesday, dated 26.1.1993, has been reported in an untrue manner in some press organs, confusing public opinion. After yesterday’s meeting between representatives of the Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party, the talks concluded with agreement to continue cooperation in support of democratic and economic reforms. In this context it was emphasized that the economic situation in the country requires political responsibility and institutional support. The leadership of the Social Democratic Party believes that the reform process must move forward and that artificial obstacles do not serve the public interest. Government scandal or a struggle of abuse and journalistic sensation?
In its issue no. 1-2 (12th issue) of April 1993, the weekly Social Democratic newspaper “Republika” underlines the extent of its dissatisfaction. According to the article, certain public positions and media polemics have been dealt with in a one-sided manner. The article refers to debates about the functioning of state administration and the raising of accusations concerning violations of public ethics. Government representatives have rejected the interpretations made, describing them as hasty and intended to be sensational. The debate continues over the boundary between public oversight and abuse of information.
