Albania must have faith restored in democracy, the democratic state, the market economy and their future in Europe

Press conference of EC representatives in Albania 1. The European Community has trusted these three past Saturdays in the implementation of the administrative, political and economic reform undertaken by the new government. 2. We consider that the economic and social situation in Albania would deteriorate more rapidly than it is today if the aid being discussed were absent. This aid concerns support for a clear budgetary and financial program, with a clear structure of priorities and concrete implementation deadlines and mechanisms. 3. In this framework, the delegation will sign with the Albanian government a new financial convention for 1993 in the amount of 26.2 million ECU, which will finance programs aimed at securing flour, medicines, chemical fertilizers, agricultural seeds, as well as credit to encourage small and medium-sized businesses. Albania will also benefit from a PHARE reconstruction program worth 35 million ECU, much of which will go to electricity production. In addition, the European Community, in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund and the G24 countries, are working on the implementation of multilateral aid for the Union. Currently Albania is receiving 60 thousand tons of grain from the humanitarian aid program.

As it stood, “VICTORY” had said the Party...

Account of an illegal rally Vasiliu skardilo te komedie-rastis-dhimbëse? faithful to PS In “ZP”, dated 23.02.1993, an announcement was published stating that deputy Abdi Baleta would give a speech in defense of “democracy” before the militants of his party. Naturally it was called a rally, gathering, manifestation, or, alternatively, an announcement over a loudspeaker. It must be said that this type of political-civic meeting, which leaves an aftertaste of quarrel and violence, has never happened. It was also promised that an “honest democrat” whose name was not given would speak there. Driven by curiosity, we went to the announced place - “Victory Square” - to see what would happen. Not long after 10 o’clock, Abdi Baleta was seen on the improvised stage built on two trucks. Then several others arrived, well-known names from the social-communists, who, with several sheets in their hands, grim faces, and raised voices, were waiting to speak. People from the villages and neighborhoods had also been summoned by loudspeaker and had gathered there. I saw national-socialist flags and people with banners. The master of ceremonies tried to create a kind of enthusiasm, but the crowd did not react much. Abdi Baleta’s speech contained familiar phrases about the “endangered democracy,” about “traitors,” about “the government selling the country,” and others from that repertoire. In the crowd there was more confusion than conviction. In the end, what remained was the impression of a gloomy scene, a painful-accidental comedy of PS loyalists.

WHO WILL PROTECT JOURNALISTS FROM ENVERIST VANDALISM?

In the second year after being overthrown from power, we are still suffering the legacy of 45 years of communist darkness. This legacy appears before us every day in different forms: in intolerance toward dissenting opinion, in insults and threats, in hate speech, and in the attempt to intimidate the free word. Yesterday, in the premises where a public event was taking place, pressure was exerted on representatives of the press and offensive language was used. The journalists were confronted with behavior that has nothing to do with political civilization or with democratic norms. To defend the journalist means to defend the public’s right to know. That is the essence of democracy. If a journalist is subjected to verbal or physical violence, society moves backward. Who will protect journalists from Enverist vandalism? The question is addressed not only to the police, but also to the political class, institutions, and civic conscience.
