WE ARE EXTREMELY RECEPTIVE TO THE PRESENCE OF NATO IN ALBANIA

It must integrate into Western structures, for example NATO, thanks to the speed of the reforms being undertaken by our country's government; freedom of voting, democracy and civil liberties are elements of particular importance. Joining NATO and other Euro-Atlantic structures is a guarantee of the country's security and stability. These ideas were expressed at a meeting where the President of the Republic, Mr. Sali Berisha, held a discussion with media representatives and with an American personality, Mr. Mander Vener [?], during a dinner. President Berisha stressed that Albania is receptive to a NATO presence in the country. According to him, our country has an important geostrategic position in the Balkans and has shown that it is determined to continue on the path of democratic reforms. He underlined that the country needs support and cooperation with Euro-Atlantic institutions to strengthen security, the economy and democratic structures. In this context, the situation in the Balkans, regional crises and the role that Albania can play as a factor of peace and stability were also discussed. The President said that the country's pro-Western orientation is irreversible and that the Albanian people broadly support this direction. The possibilities for military, political and economic cooperation with NATO member countries were also discussed, as well as the near-term prospect of Albania's rapprochement with these structures.

NATO IN ALBANIA

He praised the efforts of the Albanian authorities to democratize the country and expressed readiness to increase contacts and concrete support in the future.

THERE ARE ALL THE POSSIBILITIES FOR INTENSIFYING RELATIONS BETWEEN ALBANIA AND HUNGARY

Mr. Sali Berisha, President of the Republic of Albania, received yesterday at the Presidency Mr. Jozef Haza, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to our country, who presented his credentials. After welcoming the new Hungarian ambassador to our country, Mr. Sali Berisha stressed that work is under way to establish political, economic and social stability in Albania. The President said that the Albanian government pays great attention to its relations with neighboring countries and beyond, with countries that have valuable democratic traditions and experience, among which he singled out Hungary, with which Albania has traditional relations. On this occasion he assessed that in the new political and economic conditions there are all the possibilities for intensifying relations and cooperation between our two countries in all fields of mutual interest. For his part, the Hungarian ambassador in Tirana, Mr. Jozef Haza, after conveying the greetings of President Árpád Göncz and Prime Minister József Antall, extended to Mr. Berisha wishes for success in the work of the Albanian government and in consolidating democratic economic and political reforms in our country. Speaking further, Mr. Haza welcomed the fact that Albania has embarked on the path of democratic and economic reforms. He pointed out that his country's government is paying special attention to expanding relations with Albania and expressed confidence that cooperation between the two countries will see further development in line with their common interests. The ambassador also underlined that Hungary is ready to provide its assistance and make its experience available in various fields. The President, in order to deepen and make bilateral relations more concrete, deemed it useful to encourage contacts at different levels, as well as economic, trade, cultural and scientific cooperation.
