PRESIDENT BERISHA DISTINGUISHES
THE CONJUNCTURAL POLITICS OF GREEK
POLITICAL CIRCLES FROM THE HISTORY OF
PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE
Voices of declarations and statements against Albania and Albanians have increased in certain segments of Greek politics. Their aim is to portray Albanian-Greek relations as shaken and to give a false picture of the reality in Albania, of the situation of the Greek minority and how it is treated. They stand against reality and against a long experience of peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding between the two peoples.
Press conference of the President of the Republic
In response to journalists’ questions regarding statements by Greek political circles, the President of the Republic said that relations between the Albanian people and the Greek people have a long history of good neighborliness. They cannot be obscured by opportunistic positions driven by narrow political interests. The President stressed that Albania has respected and respects human rights and minority rights according to European standards, and that any accusation of oppression or discrimination is unfounded.
He underlined that our country has gone through a difficult period of transition, but is determined to build democratic institutions and a state governed by law. In this context, issues related to the Greek minority cannot be used as instruments of political pressure. President Berisha stressed that Albania seeks good relations with Greece and with all its neighbors, on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.
He called on Greek political circles not to incite artificial tensions and not to damage the climate of regional cooperation. The peaceful coexistence between the two peoples, he said, is a historical value that must be preserved and strengthened.
PRESIDENT BERISHA DIFFERENTIATES THE CONJUNCTURAL POLICY OF GREEK POLITICAL CIRCLES FROM THE HISTORY OF PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE
The article states that President Berisha responded to declarations from certain Greek political circles, saying that they distort Albanian-Greek relations and the reality of the Greek minority in Albania. He emphasized the long history of peaceful coexistence and said Albania respects human and minority rights according to European standards.
He added that minority issues should not be used for political pressure and called for good relations with Greece based on reciprocity and non-interference.

of Gramoz
Pashko
In the TVSH program “Shqip,” on 4.07.1993, Mr. B. Yzeiri? said that in the bulletin of the newspaper “Shqipëria,” according to notes by Gramoz Pashko, it was said that in order to win the support of the majority of the members of the Democratic Party, an anti-American line was needed. Mr. Pashko stated this without any reservations. This statement is completely untrue and harmful. It seriously damages us before Albanian and international public opinion. Never and in no party document has such a position existed. The Democratic Party has been and remains oriented toward Western values and friendship with the United States of America.

MR. SALI BERISHA PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA HELSINKI COMMITTEE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES IN GENEVA
The signatories here of this letter[?] must be understood as the result either of total ignorance of this matter, or of ill will. These gentlemen signatories, with their ignorance and their arbitrariness, are playing with the fire of nationalism, compromising a very delicate and positive process for Europe’s future.
The Helsinki Committee of Greece and other so-called committees that have taken the name of Helsinki are proving that embracing and respecting universal human rights in their own nation is a wish and not a reality, an objective and not a daily experience. They have made an accusation without any concrete fact, without any verifiable argument.
