The very clear position of the USA regarding Greece’s arbitrary stance in the crisis that began between Tirana and Athens, following the expulsion of a Greek priest beyond the country’s borders, has triggered a major outburst in Athens. According to reports received, the USA made its view known that «Athens, by expelling thousands of Albanian refugees, has violated human rights and the rights of refugees and, at the same time, has revived suspicions about its territorial claims to Albanian lands.» The US State Department announced that Greece’s negative stance will be included in the report published annually on human-rights violations.

- President Berisha received the Romanian Foreign Minister - Tirana, At the meeting that the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Teodor Melescanu, held on 6 July with the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, he conveyed to the Albanian President the greetings of the President of the Republic of Romania, Mr. Ion Iliesku, as well as his wish to organize a meeting between the presidents of the two countries, at which, he said, the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation would be signed. The Romanian minister praised Mr. Berisha’s personal efforts to develop democracy in Albania. President Berisha, for his part, thanked him for the visit and for President Iliesku’s greetings, and expressed his willingness to meet him in Tirana or Bucharest. Speaking about Albania’s foreign policy, President Berisha emphasized Albania’s commitments to respect the CSCE documents. He spoke to him about the Albanian plan for resolving Kosovo, which envisages placing this province under the control of the United Nations, as well as making the embargo against Serbia conditional on this resolution. Minister Melescanu said that the Romanian political class is well acquainted with this plan and expressed Romania’s readiness to cooperate with Albania in resolving the problem. Regarding the recent tension in Albanian-Greek relations, President Berisha said that Albania is interested in good relations with Greece, but naturally without compromising the country’s sovereignty. It is incomprehensible to insist so strongly on appointing Greek clerics to the structure of the Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. For example, the Romanian Orthodox Church, which has traditionally had very good relations with the Albanian Church, has not sought to impose the appointment of Romanian priests, despite the presence of Orthodox Aromanians in Albania. Our country is open to missionaries of all religions, but they cannot become masters in our country. President Berisha stated that each side should make efforts to improve relations, since, among other things, easing tensions is an important contribution to the stability of the region, in which we are all interested. Alongside cooperation, President Berisha emphasized that the best way to achieve understanding in the region is to establish multinational cooperation without seeking particular blocs. ATSH

The World Council of Churches has in recent days supported efforts to revive and rebuild the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, as an important component in building a democratic society and as a link with the international community. I do not believe people have forgotten the pamphlets published after every congress or “programmatic” speech by one of the “leadership comrades.” These pamphlets contained a “profound” analysis of the international situation, and every four years it turned out that “the proletarian revolution was on the agenda for resolution,” that “American imperialism” would not last much longer—at most, a few more months, and so on. Of course, as was also written above, this conclusion was drawn after a profound analysis of “the people’s struggle against imperialism, the strengthening of genuine Marxist-Leninist parties around the world, the rotting of the capitalist order, the growth of the proletariat’s struggle,” and so on. In the same style, and not at all inferior to the “former leadership comrades,” comrade Namik, the deputy chairman of the PS, makes his profound analysis (with this, comrade Namik shows that he is capable not only of trading rhyming retorts with ordinary journalists in «ZP», but also of making his analysis: - “The PD stands at the forefront of anti-democratic witnesses” (once, “American imperialism stood at the head of the reactionary forces”). - “The Albanian Parliament has completely exhausted itself” (once, “The capitalist order was rotting”). - “The President of the Republic has visibly lost the people’s confidence” (once, governments in capitalist countries did not have the support of the proletariat). Among other things, Dokle apparently conducted a survey, without saying where he conducted it (and how could he?), according to which “the role of genuine Marxist-Leninist parties is growing.” In conclusion, in bold letters «ZP» writes: “The people are openly and forcefully demanding not only the government’s resignation, but also new elections.” So, “the revolution is on the agenda for resolution; the people’s struggle has brought capitalism to its end”! The 1990s gave E. Hoxha the answer.

The English humanitarian association «Barnabas Trust», which distributes aid in several countries around the world, brought medicines worth 1,500 dollars to the city of Korçë in recent days. They will be given to the residents of Turan according to their needs. The association’s representative, Nikoleta Ann Granë, told the ATSH correspondent that this is just the beginning; in the future, we will bring greater aid to meet the needs of the health service.

In recent days, the «Sorros» Foundation donated 1,400 books in English to the «Thimi Mitko» library in the city of Korçë. They cover a range of fields, from literature to technical and scientific books. While its collection of foreign books is being enriched, the library is having difficulty obtaining books published in the country, since the method of their distribution has still not been definitively resolved. In cooperation with the French Embassy in Tirana, the library is working to open an exhibition of French books soon.

Gjirokastër. = The director of the «Gjirokastra» Printing House, Aleko Kufo, refuted a report published a few days ago in the Greek media, according to which the Albanian government, continuing its practices against the Greek minority, had prevented the publication of schoolbooks in Greek. The director in question told ATSH that the report is untrue and has no confirmation whatsoever from the printing house’s managers or employees. The truth is that this printing house has undertaken to publish eight schoolbooks in Greek; four of them have been delivered to the book enterprise, two have been completed, and two others are in progress. It is true that there was an interruption, but this happened for technical reasons and because of a shortage of workers. During this time, work on publishing these books, as well as any others that may follow, has continued without interruption. (ATSH)

We believe that, following the departure of a Greek cleric from Albania, Greece’s reaction, by expelling thousands of Albanians, has gone too far. We believe this problem could be resolved through dialogue within the framework of human rights and international law. We therefore hope that an end will be put as soon as possible to this difficult situation facing thousands of Albanian citizens. The reports reaching us that Greece is reinforcing its military presence on the border with Albania are causing concern. Now, when the need for stability in the Balkans is felt more than ever, we believe it would be beneficial not to provoke new crises.

Ladies and gentlemen! As we know, our relations with Greece have recently been suddenly and deeply shaken. The actions of the Greek authorities prove in a drastic manner that the measures announced by the chauvinist spokesmen were awaiting a pretext to be put into effect. Thousands of young Albanian emigrants, whom fate has condemned to endure everything, are being forced to leave Greece under the dark power of humiliating violence. The Greek authorities are thus, in an equivalent manner, retaliating for the illegal and unconstitutional actions of the Greek citizen in a cassock—actions for which some countries in the world impose capital punishment. The fanatics think they serve Christ when they become instruments of religious and chauvinist intrigues. If we are to believe reports that “we will send back 200,000 refugees,” then the ill-considered blow Greece is dealing Albania will be felt keenly on the domestic social front, even if the vacuum will be felt by the demos and Greek property owners. In any case, it is up to us to take measures to cope with the situation. Meanwhile, the turbulent Balkans are proving highly dynamic: the parties are completing their work in Bosnia, where it seems the Croats, too, are taking their share. In the context of bringing this arrangement to fruition, Kosovo is next, and Albanians are likely to become involved in this war, which we might call Balkan. Whatever has happened so far, Albanians have declared themselves on the side of those states that want to avert war and seek every solution by peaceful means and in accordance with international charters. Unfortunately, this commendable stance of ours is not only unappreciated, but is being provoked from the outset by an August 1 that will blacken the pages of the perilous history that would place us between fires. It is a little strange for the modern times in which we live, but history has opened the Balkans’ dusty Yalta file, where Albania, as is known, does not appear as a state according to the decision of the Big Three. We could never wish for or believe this, but such a thing brings to mind some recent statements in Greece, such as: “Northern Epirus is Greece,” “Greece-Serbia—a single border,” and so on. Nevertheless, these are heated chauvinist passions, since officially Mr. Micotaqis has declared the solidity of the Albanian-Greek borders. Therefore, the national and border problems between Albanians and Greeks are definitively resolved. Naturally, someone may perhaps be entitled to think or wish for other solutions or outcomes, but in this case everyone is obliged to respect and uphold the prerogatives and obligations arising from international documents, and not chauvinist instruments.
