As an OSCE member, Albania, since the time of the signing of the Copenhagen Charter, has accepted the document and its norms, placing peaceful and democratic development and respect for human rights at the center of its strategy. This opinion was expressed yesterday by Prime Minister Aleksandër Meksi during the reception of Mr. Maks van der Stoel, the OSCE special envoy for national policies. At this meeting, the talks focused on Albanian-Greek relations after their recent worsening, as well as on the rights of the Greek minority in Albania and the rights of Albanian emigrants in Greece. Prime Minister Meksi expressed the readiness of the Albanian government to view relations with Greece in all their dimensions, with the aim that a climate of understanding and cooperation may replace confrontation. He said that, in general, relations between the two countries should rest on the political will of the parties to engage in the fair and peaceful resolution of problems. Emphasizing that the Council of Europe parliamentary committee is the most competent authority for dealing with the minority issue, Mr. Meksi said that Albania is acting in accordance with its recommendations. At the meeting it was noted that the position of the Greek minority in Albania is defined by the Albanian constitution and legislation, as well as by international documents on the protection of human rights and freedoms, signed by the Albanian government. Mr. Meksi underlined that, although the number of Albanian citizens emigrating to Greece is considerable, the Albanian government has never raised the issue of Albanian emigrants beyond the framework of human rights and international standards. For his part, Mr. Maks van der Stoel praised the Albanian government’s commitment to finding constructive solutions within the framework of mutual understanding and regional cooperation.
