THANKS TO THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY!

Recently, even under conditions of general economic and financial instability, our country has been experiencing calm days. The work of the government and other state institutions to overcome the difficult economic situation, to establish public order, and to strengthen the rule of law is bearing fruit. In this framework, especially after taking control of the energy situation, the government is taking steps to resolve several other problems inherited from the past. Naturally, the full normalization of the situation will become possible when the market economy has become a tangible reality for the majority of the population. Our country's chances of moving at a faster pace on the path of reforms are closely linked to the development of a favorable international climate for our country. In this sense, the adoption of the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the European Community on Albania, which decides to grant our country substantial aid, is a fact of great importance. Through this resolution, our country will benefit from a fund of 35 million ECU, which will be used to finance imports of essential goods such as energy, raw materials, and spare parts for key sectors of the economy. This fund will be an important help for our country in conditions of transition. The benefits for Albania are not only material. This aid is a clear expression of the European Community’s confidence in the direction of reforms in Albania and in its ability to face the difficulties of this period. It also constitutes an incentive to continue resolutely with the policy of reforms and European integration. On the other hand, this aid confirms that our country is not alone. Albania has friends and partners ready to help it in the difficult process of democratic and economic transformation. This support should serve as encouragement for all political and social actors to contribute to strengthening stability and maintaining the pace of reforms. In these circumstances, the aid of the European Community should be welcomed as an act of solidarity and responsibility. It deserves the sincere gratitude of the Albanian public opinion. The Albanian people are clear that the road to Europe requires work, sacrifice, and determination, but it also requires the support of our friends. The European Community is proving that it understands this reality and is ready to provide its own contribution. Albania must wisely make use of this support to strengthen the foundations of economic development and improve the lives of its citizens. Only in this way will the trust that European partners are showing toward it be fully justified.

Who for the prevention of conflict in the South of the Balkans

Statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Albania Albania wants a peaceful solution to the Kosovo problem through the restoration of its status as a constitutive unit within the framework of the former Yugoslav Federation. Resolving the conflict by peaceful means does not mean that Serbia and the relevant international factors should not be called upon to state clearly how they ultimately envisage a solution to the Kosovo problem, and what role the international community can play in preventing an escalation of the conflict and finding a peaceful solution. As long as, through its mediation, there is intervention in Bosnia, the international community cannot turn a blind eye to the Kosovo issue. Postponing its solution constitutes a risk of the outbreak of a new conflict in the South of the Balkans. Resolving the Kosovo problem in the highest interest of peace and stability in the region would also serve the resolution of the Yugoslav crisis. Kosovo should be seen as a matter not only internal to Serbia and the former Yugoslavia, but one of international importance. This issue cannot be left outside the attention of international forums. Otherwise, an outbreak of it would have much broader consequences for the region. (Continues on page 4)

THE UNITY OF THE EXTREMISTS OF THE LEADERSHIP OF THE PS IS ENSURED BY THE MODE OF CRIME

Reflections through unframed wooden portraits... Before we move on to the condemnation of this broad political argument, we will pause at a fact that once again shows the totality of the evils this party unleashes. When and how is the criminalization of a political force produced? It is usually thought that political crime is born and develops only in environments where tyranny and terror rule. That is also a truth. But, apparently, with the Albanian Socialist Party, a completely special phenomenon is taking place. It is turning into an organism in which political extremism is fed by practices of violence, pressure, and organized slander. Instead of being a constructive opposition that would help improve the country’s political and economic life, it has sunk into a strategy of tension. Part of this strategy are verbal attacks, the incitement of hatred, and the attempt to block every achievement of the government. This is not normal opposition; it is behavior that slides toward a destructive and anti-democratic model. Even more worrying is the fact that at the head of this force are figures who do not hesitate to use harsh language and who, through their actions, create the climate for irresponsible acts. When the leadership of a party tolerates or encourages such behavior, then its unity is not based on ideas, but on a mode of action that comes close to political crime. This makes it especially dangerous for the democratic future of the country. Albanian society needs an opposition that competes with alternatives, not a structure fed by permanent conflict. If the extremists of the leadership of the PS continue to dominate this force, the damage will not be only to the party itself, but to the entire political climate in Albania. Finally, the public must understand that democracy cannot be consolidated on fear, slander, and incitement to violence. It requires dialogue, responsibility, and respect for institutions. Any attempt to replace this logic with a harsh practice of division deserves a clear public rejection.
