All the files, nothing more, was this the firm and rigorous order of the commission that would have brought down the government of the democrats, if the truth about their activities had been made public. By a final decision of the Presidium of the Assembly, the presentation of the documentation about which there has been discussion and for which 67 people have been killed was removed from the agenda. Everyone knows what it means to monitor the work of a government. To demand accountability, to take stock of shortcomings and merits, to identify the causes of deficiencies, to propose solutions and to monitor their implementation. This should be the practice of a democratic country. But here, it has been turned into something else. Not only was nothing concrete said about the government’s work, but there was a persistent demand that the documentation not be discussed. This gave the debate a purely political character. The issue was not the government, but the files. At yesterday’s meeting it became clear that the real aim was to hide the truth. That part of the documents linked to the dictatorship, to the crimes, to the responsibilities of well-known names, to their collaboration and to the way that legacy is being used today was carefully avoided. For years Albanians have been asking to know the truth. They have the right to know who persecuted them, who signed internments, imprisonments and executions, who served evil. Not bringing these truths to light means serving the dictatorship even today. Files are not a curiosity, but evidence. They are the testimony of an era that calls for moral and political justice. Without this justice there can be no genuine reconciliation, nor true democracy. Whoever fears the files fears the truth. Instead of discussing the substance, slander, insinuations, noise and fog were used. An attempt was made to create the impression that everything was a power struggle. But that is not the case. It is a battle for national memory and for the moral standard of politics. Albania cannot move forward while carrying the secrets of crime on its shoulders. A free society is not built on silence. The files are the shame and the crime of the dictatorship.
