The annual EDU meeting will be held in Budapest. Yesterday, the chairman of the Albanian Democratic Party, Mr. Eduart Selami, departed for Budapest to take part in the Annual Meeting of the Leaders of the EDU Parties (European Democratic Union). Thirty-five member countries of the EDU (International Democratic Union) and 25 EDU member countries will participate in this important meeting, represented by presidents, prime ministers and party leaders. On 28 August, the Central Assembly of the Party of Democratic Prosperity held its third session in Skopje. A delegation of the Democratic Party of Albania, headed by its deputy chairman, Mr. Ali Spahia, also took part in the proceedings. In his greeting, Mr. Spahia highlighted the major role played by the Party of Democratic Prosperity in organizing political thought and raising the awareness of Albanians in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The Democratic Party of Albania, Mr. Ali stressed, considers the Party of Democratic Prosperity one of the principal political forces active among the Albanians of Macedonia. After speaking about the good results achieved, Mr. Spahia also discussed the extremely important and difficult tasks facing the Party of Democratic Prosperity at the present moment, and especially its leadership, in realizing the democratic and national aspirations of the Albanian people and nation. There were many exchanges at this Assembly concerning the positions and actions of certain leaders of the Party of Democratic Prosperity. Twenty-nine members of the Central Assembly, or most of the members present, who represent ... of the membership of this Assembly, put forward an initiative to change the leadership, as well as the Party of Democratic Prosperity. After extensive debate, it was voted and decided that the matter of the chairman would be discussed in greater detail, and a decision would then be made at the next meeting of the Central Assembly of the Party of Democratic Prosperity, in two weeks. The third session of the Central Assembly of the Party of Democratic Prosperity was also attended by Albanian ministers in the Macedonian government and members of the parliamentary group of the Party of Democratic Prosperity in the Macedonian parliament. THE PEOPLE NO LONGER TRUST THEIR DECEIVERS FOR 52 YEARS They know how to speak with their own voice and vote. Those who talk and shout a lot about the people think a lot about themselves. “We are with the people,” “We work for the people,” “We are making sacrifices because we want what is best for the people,” “In the name of the people,” “The People’s Voice”—the people, the people, the people... How much is said today in the name of the people; how much the word “people” is abused, by good mouths and bad mouths; how much people exploit them, solely to make the people side with whoever shouts loudest in their name, to give their verdict to whoever is ready to raise the word “people” to the heavens. And yet history teaches us, above all, that the people have been victimized when they have rushed after whoever shouted loudest on their behalf. A recent case, which still weighs heavily on our conscience and proves this, is Albania’s history over the last fifty years. Who spoke more about the people and in the name of the people than the head of the red dictatorship, Enver Hoxha? Who spoke more in the name of the people and for their good than the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the PPSH, the entire red caste and all communist propaganda, which, behind suggestive terms such as “the people,” “proletarian democracy,” “freedom for ordinary people,” “equality and well-being for all,” concealed the great masquerade, the great crime being committed against the nation, Albania and its citizens, the Albanians? They put people’s hands in handcuffs “in the name of the people”; they tried and sentenced people to death, or drowned them outside prisons, “in the name of the people”; and neighborhood councils deported families “in the name of the people.” There is much talk about the people today, too; oaths and solemn pledges are made in their name, tears (crocodile tears) are often shed for their suffering and troubles. Indeed, some go so far as to make declarations in their name—people, politicians and parties that still have totalitarian notions deeply rooted in their minds, notions that the PPSH, with all its monstrous propaganda power, tried to implant in people. And in fact, the people have eyes and ears with which to see and hear. They have minds with which to assess and judge; they react with contempt or approval, express agreement or opposition, according to the alternatives, the resources and prospects offered by this or that political alternative, and how well or poorly it aligns with the vital interests of most people. On the whole, the people are not a puppet, nor are they uniform; they are a heterogeneous system, made up of the most diverse groups and strata. Within themselves, they are differentiated into various positions according to economic interests, ideological views, social and moral constitutional inclinations, cultural and political levels, and the information and knowledge they have of the reality in which they live. Thus, this internal differentiation, sometimes taking varied forms as it develops, leads to the emergence of different political alternatives and the creation of political parties which, once established, seek to expand their sphere of influence, trying one day to become parties of the entire people. In practice this is impossible, because the people can never be homogenized to such an extent that everyone thinks alike, has the same cultural, political and scientific level, and—still less—has the same economic interests. Indeed, if this were to happen, it would be fatal to the vitality of the human race itself and to the vitality of the society in which people have organized themselves in order to progress and harmonize, to some degree, their own survival. It is well known that the diversity of systems is one of the most decisive factors in their stability. This is true in the physical world as well as in the biological world, and all the more so of the system called human society. The red, left-wing dictatorship in the Eastern countries proved better than anything else how much the violent homogenization of society diminishes its vitality. And yet, within this heterogeneous makeup there are certain unifying, connecting and homogenizing elements that make people come together and form one and the same society within a given society, in a given state. This is connected with the values that are sacred to all people, with those values that are fundamental and essential to a dignified human life. These two tendencies dominate social life and are in constant conflict with one another. One is national, consolidating, advancing and becoming more useful in the efforts to progress and emancipate human society through its intellectualization and humanization. But do all the politicians who shout so loudly in the name of the people today possess these qualities? Certainly not; some of these politicians are not even interested in them. For who does not know that when politicians speak, they speak from the position of a part, from the position of a party? And secondly, a politician does not engage in politics out of philanthropy, but because, through politics, he also realizes his own interests, ambitions, goals and potential. So what right does someone have, when speaking for one part and representing a set of interests and ambitions—even if these are lofty goals—to declare that they speak in the name of the people and shoulder a burden that is not theirs to bear? This is always where one senses the fraud: the smell of a banal, communist-style fraud. The aim is to make the people the property of a party, the party’s people. A person, a politician, may speak in their own name, in the name of their own alternative, in the name of their own party, but never in the name of everyone, in the name of the people, because the people also include those who think differently, those who accept and have chosen another alternative. Speaking excessively in the name of the people shows that a political movement does not trust the credibility of its own alternative; it does not trust that the chosen alternative will succeed, and it is precisely this insecurity that it seeks to conceal through manipulation and exaggeration. Naturally, political struggle is a struggle between alternatives, but at the same time it is also a struggle for power and a struggle of interests among individuals and groups, among different ... It is played out in the political arena before the people’s eyes, not without purpose, but to broaden the electoral reach of one alternative or another, of one political force or another. In this game, idealists are few, of course. Most are illusionist spectators. The frequent use of the word “people” seeks precisely to increase their number, because each time this word is used for that purpose, it diminishes the number of genuinely steadfast supporters. But the people must be completely freed from illusions and become realists, as an Italian political scientist says. This is the only sure way to save them from the adventurism of manipulative politicians, who always keep the word “people” in their mouths like chewing gum that has long since lost its flavor. — CHARGE: ABUSE OF OFFICE — — Although raw materials were available, the plan was fulfilled at only 2.5% (!) — — Four million bottles have disappeared from the factory without a trace (!) — — Substandard raw materials were imported and, as a result, the brewery did not operate (!) — Following an article published two months ago in the newspaper «RD» entitled «Even we don’t know why beer isn’t being produced», the “profiteers” were finally removed. On the basis of a report made by the State Control Service, three managers of the Food Combine were arrested last Friday: Guxim Bejkeshi, director of the Brewery; Dhimitër M… sa, director of the Alcoholic Beverages Factory; and Niko Perivani, chief engineer. They were arrested because, as managers of this combine, through their actions and inaction they caused its factory to move toward bankruptcy. The six-month plan figures show “fulfillment” of up to 2.5 percent, even though raw materials were available. As a result of these managers’ indifference and lack of responsibility (according, in any case, to information from the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office), four million bottles were produced and then lost without a trace. It is known that domestic beer production has been halted for a long time. This is because expired raw material (barley) was brought in through imports, making the other foreign beers overwhelmingly competitive. All this has caused the state incalculable financial losses. On Sunday, the 50th anniversary of the frontal resistance and the 49th anniversary of the liberation of this region were commemorated in Konispol. On this occasion, a rally was held in the town center, attended by residents of the region; members of and relatives from the families of the fallen; representatives of the leadership of the Organization of Military Personnel, Retirees and Discharged Personnel; political parties and associations; members of the People’s Assembly, and others. The Minister of Defence of the Republic of ... was also present, who, among other things, said that this resistance was a high point in the history of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War. By commemorating it, we honor the fighting traditions of our people, their heroism and sacrifices. It is our duty always to remember these traditions and sacrifices with respect and, alongside them, to reassess objectively those events and figures who gave their lives for freedom and social progress. The destructive character of the far left cannot be glossed over with Mr. Pellumbi’s rambling speeches. Mr. Pellumbi’s philosophy has shifted toward the far left. The theory of broken skulls and the phenomenon of people being dragged along have not been confronted by the SP’s people. Communist fury, illegal lists, threatening speeches, calls for F. Nano’s release and a drive for revenge cannot be disguised by Mr. Pellumbi’s model-1 speech. Anyone who has observed the SP’s political strategy over the past two years has had no difficulty identifying the mistaken direction of its political course. Starting from its Bolshevik substance and compelled by the struggle for survival within itself, the SP has pursued an aggressive political course, seeking revenge against the largest democratic political force, the DP. In all its political actions, through all the historic stages Albanian society has passed, the SP, owing to the dominance of the far-left faction, has made its electorate ask for ... [text unclear]. This far left, which prevents the SP from disintegrating and separating itself from the party along European lines, has driven the SP toward self-destruction. In his speech, «The course that knows no limits in force ... constructive parliamentary ... is desirable», Mr. Pellumbi draws a mistaken conclusion ... But at least a new political program, or a constructive position for a party in different circumstances, as the SP claims ...

To the people of the Konispol region On the occasion of your celebrations, the 50th anniversary of the Frontal Resistance and the 49th anniversary of the Liberation of Konispol, I send my warmest wishes to the brave and patriotic people of your region. The Battle of Konispol was the first frontal battle, in which the «Çamëria» battalion, the territorial forces and all the people of your region repelled the attacks of much larger enemy forces and steadfastly defended our ancestral lands. Their courage and heroism are a glorious page in the history of our people’s struggles for freedom and national independence. As we commemorate this important event, we remember with respect the fallen heroes of this war, who watered our sacred soil with their blood.
