A year of consolidation of democracy

The current statistics, and the absence of fluctuations within them, clearly show the shortcomings of the stabilization government's decisions and make it clear that Albania has decisively entered the process of consolidating the economy and monetary stabilization. In a very short period of time, Albania has carried out an economic and social revolution, with extremely large political and ideological changes. The Republic of Albania, thanks to clear guidance and the professional dedication of specialists, has made it possible for 1992, described as the peak of economic and political difficulties, to turn into a clearer stage of recovery and stabilization. During this time it has been possible to curb inflation and lay the foundations for a market economy. In 1992-1993, important measures were undertaken to liberalize prices, privatize land and enterprises, as well as to create a new climate for private enterprise. These measures have brought noticeable changes in macroeconomic indicators. Although the Albanian economy inherited a very difficult situation, the first results of the reform are showing encouraging signs. Growth in production in certain sectors, the circulation of goods and the increase in supply on the market are clear indicators of this improvement. Figures and reports from financial institutions testify to a noticeable change in the economic course. This requires the continuation of reforms, greater financial discipline and a more rational management of national resources. Compared with data from previous years, today's indicators show that the Albanian economy is in a transitional phase, but with the correct orientation toward stability. Despite inherited difficulties, the country is moving in the right direction. To meet the demands of this transition, the government has sought to create a new functional system, with clearer institutional responsibilities and broader cooperation with international bodies. This has helped restore the confidence of the public and foreign partners. The reform process remains difficult and requires sacrifices, but it has already created the prerequisites for more sustainable development. That is why the past year and the beginning of this year are considered a period of consolidation of democracy and of clear orientation toward a market economy.

THE BLACK ARMS OF THE PPSH, PROTECTION OF N. ANO

Alarmed by the broad public opinion and the unprecedented indignation of the entire people against Nano, the main exponent of the reactionary Albanian left that is forcefully seeking to bring back the red dictatorship once again, the Socialist Party is leaving no form or means unused to defend its leader. After exhausting every kind of insinuation, lies and justifications, yesterday it finally turned to the use of the most dangerous form of political blackmail, about which our press has warned from the very beginning. Driven into this adventure by necessity and by the failure to cover up the obvious guilt of its leader, one of the most fanatical militants of Nano's party yesterday circulated an entire barrage of slander against the President of the Republic and chairman of the Democratic Party, Mr. Sali Berisha. All of this is a desperate attempt to divert attention from the Nano affair and to create a false political climate. The Albanian public opinion has now understood this old tactic of the PPSH and its successors. (Continued on page 4)

A realistic chronicle OF THE SOCIALIST RALLY IN BERAT

(Secret operation) “Pari-enver-I am almost dead!” That so much self-importance and delirium of the PS surrounds a force on the brink, and likewise so many grotesque characters bring out its ridiculous and miserable reflections. Someone may rightfully doubt whether this is a fantasy invented by the author or not, but in fact it is only a realistic tableau of a rally of Albanian socialism, filled with laughter, insults, cheers and cries. “Pari-enver-I am almost dead” was the refrain of one of those present, while the crowd moved among slogans and banners in a heated political atmosphere. Amid the cries, curses and hysterical tones, there appeared a picture that the author presents as an indicator of the moral and political crisis of the Albanian left. Nano the thief, Nano the traitor, Nano, go on! (Continued on page 4)
