The Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Aleksander Meksi, received at the Prime Minister’s Office Turkey’s Minister of Construction and Public Works, Onur Kombaracibash, who has arrived in Albania on a visit at the invitation of our Minister of Construction and Environmental Planning, Ilir Manushi. At the outset, Prime Minister Meksi welcomed the guest from Turkey and emphasized the good relations Albania has with Turkey. Mr. Kombaracibash thanked him for the reception and said that Turkey pays special attention to Albania and follows its democratic developments. Our two countries, he said, are not only friends but also brothers. In the past, and in the future, the Turkish people and government will provide Albania with their assistance. Subsequently, the Turkish minister spoke about his first talks with his Albanian counterpart, which he described as “fruitful regarding the problems we can solve together. The beginning is good, and I hope that we will also hold meetings in Turkey in the future, so that we can continue to meet in Turkey in the future.” (ATSH)

As part of the meetings at the North Atlantic Assembly, yesterday afternoon the Albanian delegation, consisting of Mr. Eduart Selami and Mr. Petrika Minga, met with the president of this Assembly, Mr. Buvar, and its Secretary General, Mr. Peter Kartier. They thanked the gentlemen for the support and backing that the North Atlantic Assembly, NATO and Mr. Verner himself have given Albania, especially for granting it observer membership status in this Assembly. In a wide-ranging presentation, Mr. Selami and Mr. Minga spoke about the progress of democratic processes and political life in Albania. They emphasized that, compared with the countries of Eastern Europe, Albania has faced greater difficulties, and today it is making every effort to overcome them in the economic, social and institutional spheres. Thanks to the support of the entire population, which Albanians have given to the Democrats, and thanks to the moral and material support of the international community, Albania is now among the areas where things have got onto the right track, and positive changes are evident everywhere and continually. Today, May 23, 1993, the chairman of the SP, comrade Fatos Nano, is visiting the city of Peshkopi, continuing his crusade to make and draw after him crowds of old and young Enverists, who are convinced and determined to sacrifice everything—the democratic cause, the nation, and even the SP itself—solely to save from deserved punishment the third Zeus of their party. Several days ago, extensive preparations were made in Tirana and Peshkopi so that this visit would go down in history and be made magnificent, like the Enverist visits. The SP commissars from Tirana and Peshkopia were engaged as if in an operation of concentrated force, to carry out as effectively as possible the scenario prepared by masters of the regime’s rallies of hypocrisy and demagoguery. Drawing on their old experience of clandestine work, they spread through neighborhoods and from house to house to delight the people of Dibra with the news that Chairman Nano was coming among them. With their slogans and old propaganda fairy tales, they set about convincing the people of Dibra that comrade Nano was coming to Peshkopi not to seek their help and support, but because he greatly missed them (just as Enver often did), and that with his words he would magically heal their old and new wounds and turn them once again from the thorny democratic wilderness into the “socialist paradise.” To reinforce this shameless propaganda campaign, leaflets were also prepared and voluntarily distributed in the homes of Dibra by veterans of leaflet distribution. To help the SP propagandists as part of this crusade by Nano to save his seat and his sullied honor, we are printing the leaflet in full. On May 23, 1993, at 11:00 a.m., a large, lawful public rally will be held in the square of the “Nazmi Rushiti” agricultural high school to protest against the government and defend the underprivileged strata. Chairman of the PSSH Fatos Nano and a group of SP deputies will take part in the rally and address it. On this occasion, we invite all the Dibra electorate, the citizens of Peshkopi, villagers, Eurosocialists and pensioners, women and intellectuals, school students, etc., to unite their voices in this protest. You who suffer from unemployment and the hardship of living on assistance; you who are suffering to the core under today’s opposition’s current rule; you who are experiencing firsthand the fierce struggle of the clans over the effects of allegiance; you who today are tasting economic humiliation and the grip of police violence under today’s dictatorial and police state.
