SALI BERISHA IN KORÇË AT THE SPORTS PALACE In the hall of the Sports Palace in the city of Korçë yesterday, the President of the Republic met with more than 2,500 sympathizers and supporters of the Democratic Party. President of the Republic Mr. Sali Berisha with dignity First of all, I want to express from the bottom of my heart, and to all the citizens of the district of Korçë, my deepest gratitude for the support they give me and for the respect they show for the Democratic Party and its government. Albania is a country with which I and all the leaders of the Democratic Party feel very proud, because its people quickly became the first in power in the country to suffer class struggle and class-enemy resistance under dictatorship longer than any other country in Europe. This hated system turned this country into a true desert of freedom and human rights. It left Albanians free only in illusion and with the possibility of escape and separation from their country. It left the lands fenced with barbed wire and washed the country’s border in blood in the name of victorious socialism. It imprisoned and interned Albanians for free movement, for education and work. The communist system in Albania is among the cruelest in Europe and in the world. But we do not make comparisons in relation to our neighbors; we make them according to the standards of freedom and human rights of the free countries of Europe. Korçë and Albania have been and remain true centers of anti-communism in Albania. Its citizens, its villagers, its workers, its intellectuals, the former politically persecuted, and honest democrats were among the first to rise up against the most Stalinist dictatorship in Europe. These citizens gave the country its first opposition parties, and at the same time the Democratic Party. Freedom for Albanians is a great national ideal, it is a mission, it is faith, it is an ideal. It knows no borders; it is unstoppable and irreversible. That is why freedom is expanding more and more every day in Albania. (continued on page 2)
