I DECIDED FOR DIALOGUE AMONG POLITICAL FORCES - PATHS THAT HELP IN THE COUNTRY’S DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Press conference of the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha
. The President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, held a press conference yesterday, in which he addressed the economic and political problems that are being widely discussed in Albanian public opinion and internationally. Answering questions from domestic and foreign journalists, President Berisha stressed that the turning point made by Albania from a totalitarian and Stalinist regime toward a free and democratic society, in an extraordinarily short time, without plunging the country into crisis and dramatic turmoil, as other former communist countries in transition have experienced, is evidence of a correct and realistic policy. Answering the question of why he proposed the round table, President Berisha said this had been an idea he had expressed for a long time, emphasizing that political dialogue is the best way to solve the country’s problems. He pointed out that the process of democratic and economic reforms requires broad political understanding and the involvement of all political forces. The President said that the opposition has its right to express itself and to criticize, but stressed that no one can obstruct democratic processes through blocking methods or political violence. He underlined that the government and state institutions are determined to move forward on the path of reforms, the consolidation of the rule of law, and the market economy. At the press conference, the President also spoke about relations with neighboring countries and with international partners, emphasizing the importance of Albania’s integration into European structures. According to him, the country needs stability, increased investment, and a normal political climate, where debates are conducted in a civil and institutional manner. President Berisha also addressed economic issues, mentioning privatization, the fight against inflation, the encouragement of production, and the improvement of living standards. He stressed that the difficulties are great, but that the path embarked upon has no turning back. At the end of the conference, the President repeated his call for dialogue among political forces as the best means to advance the country’s democratic development process.
