THE USA HAVE SUPPORTED AND
WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT EVEN MORE
STRONGLY ALBANIA, THE PD AND
PRESIDENT BERISHA
"Albania the most steadfast country in the struggle
against all regimes in Europe for 1994"
From 28–30 September, the American Foreign
Prime Minister, Lorens Igellberger [?], held a series of
discussions in the European Union with the foreign
ministers of the European countries that cooperate
with the USA, U.S. Deputy Defense Ministers, the
American representative to the European Nations and
at the American embassy in Brussels.
Sali Berisha held one of the busiest and most
productive meetings in the USA. They began with the
meeting he had with the Secretary-General of the UN,
Boutros Ghali, then with the Defense Secretary Les
Aspin, with the Secretary of State Warren Christopher,
with the Senate Chairman Al Gore, with Senator Robert
Dole, with General Colin Powell, with members of the
Senate and with the American administration.
President Berisha was received with special respect
by President Clinton at the White House. These were
meetings of extraordinary importance for our country.
In all these meetings, the talks took place in a very
warm and friendly atmosphere and were marked by
their sincerity. President Berisha presented to his
interlocutors the economic situation in the country,
the seriousness of the Albanian government’s policy,
and the successes achieved in economic and political
reforms.
In his meetings President Berisha spoke openly and
very sincerely about the difficulties our country faces,
about the vital need of our economy for foreign aid,
about the risk of destabilization, about the further
consolidation of democracy, and about a strong aid
policy that our country needs in all areas of life.
President Berisha devoted special attention to the
problems of Kosovo, which have turned into a serious
risk not only for its fate, but also for peace and stability
in the region. He called on the international community
to keep the Kosovo crisis at the center of attention and
to take preventive measures before it is too late.
He repeated that Kosovo is not simply a human rights
issue, but a political problem that requires a political
solution.
Members of the American government, many senators
and congressmen, the Secretary of Defense and the
Chairman of the Army Staff, as well as other senior
leaders of the American administration, highly praised
Albania’s achievements and the policy of the Albanian
government. In particular, they valued President
Berisha’s leadership and his role in the major transfor-
mations that Albania is carrying out. According to them,
Albania represents a successful model in Eastern
Europe and a serious and trustworthy partner of the
West.
Representatives of the State Department, the National
Security Council and the Pentagon, as well as
congressmen and senators, declared that the USA have
supported and will continue to support Albania, the PD
and President Berisha. They said that Albania is the
country most determined in the struggle against the
communist regimes in Eastern Europe and deserves
greater political and economic support.
In many meetings, issues of economic aid, military
cooperation and Albania’s Euro-Atlantic integration
were also discussed. President Berisha stressed that
our country is committed to reforms, political pluralism
and the market economy.
In the talks held in Washington it was noted that
Albania remains a factor of stability in the region and a
reliable ally of the USA.
President Berisha’s visit to the USA was assessed as
very successful and as an important step toward
strengthening Albanian-American relations.
