THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, SALI BERISHA, RECEIVED SIR LEON BRITTAN, VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE EC COMMISSION
After the meeting they had with the members of the presidium of the People’s Assembly, a delegation of the European Community led by Mr. Brittan, Vice-Chairman of the EC Commission, was received yesterday by the President of the Republic, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha. At this meeting, the progress of democratic and economic reforms in Albania was discussed, as well as the problems of the country’s European integration. President Berisha stressed the determination of the Albanian government to carry forward the reforms and strengthen relations with European institutions. Mr. Brittan praised the progress made and expressed the readiness of the structures of the European Community to support Albania in the process of democratic and economic transformation. The expansion of economic and technical cooperation was also discussed, as well as the prospects for Albania’s further rapprochement with Europe.

INTELLECTUALS ARE THE MIND AND SOUL OF THE NATION
Tirana - The General Association of Persecuted Albanian Political Detainees held the proceedings of its congress yesterday. President of the Republic Sali Berisha also took part in this congress. Speaking before the delegates, the President said that intellectuals are the mind and soul of the nation and that their role in democratic processes is irreplaceable. He stressed the need for national reconciliation, the condemnation of the crimes of the past, and the restoration of moral values in the life of the country. The meeting also discussed the situation of former political persecuted persons, their involvement in public life, and the need for institutional support.

Meeting of the President of the Republic Sali Berisha with Mr. Alain Lamassoure, French Delegate Minister for European Affairs
Yesterday the President of the Republic received Mr. Alain Lamassoure[?], French Delegate Minister for European Affairs. During the conversation, bilateral relations between Albania and France were addressed, along with economic and cultural cooperation, as well as French support for Albania’s rapprochement with European institutions. President Berisha praised France’s role in Europe and expressed the desire to intensify political and economic contacts. For his part, the French minister stressed his government’s interest in democratic developments in Albania.
