Yesterday morning, the President of the Republic, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha, visited the Institute for Students Who Cannot See, to celebrate with them the 30th anniversary of the founding of their Institute. Present on this visit were also the Chairman of the Presidium of the People’s Assembly, Mr. Pjetër Arbnori; ministers Tritan Shehu, Rexhep Uka, Khezair Teliti; MPs Azem Hajdari and Ylli Vejsiu; the Mayor of Tirana, Mr. Sali Kelmendi; former students of the school, guests, etc. After the welcome words from the institute’s director, Mr. Ramazan Kabashi, the Minister of Education, Mr. Xhezair Teliti, gave his greetings. Then the students gave those present an artistic concert, as dignified as it was moving, with songs, recitations, and piano performances. The President of the Republic, Mr. Sali Berisha, spoke with the students and, among other things, told them: “I congratulate you very much, because you truly are strong-hearted people. You have the admiration not only of your peers, but of the whole people. This concert and this program will remain unforgettable for me throughout my life. You have made us happy and impressed us with the successes you have achieved. On Friday, November 5, the Bulqizë branch of the DP held its second conference. Also in attendance were the chairman of the PDSH, Eduard Selami; the DP Secretary, Mr. Tomorr Dosti; and Messrs. Safet Zhulali, Agron Qoku, and Azem Hajdari. The conference was chaired by the branch chairman, Mr. Petrit Shehu. The report on the activities of the Governing Council and its chairman was delivered by board member Mr. Afrim Oshtkuni. The report presented the successes and shortcomings of this branch and its Governing Council and chairman, as well as relations between the DP and the local government. The analysis shows that the Bulqizë DP branch did good work during the election campaign and increased its ranks with new members committed to the DP program. Thus, of 944 members, 97 are intellectuals and 104 are young people. It was emphasized that the victory in the September local elections in the municipality of Zerqan(it) is evidence of this good work. Likewise, the election of Mr. Bashkim Lame, from the ranks of the DP, as Chairman of the District Executive Committee was a victory for the Bulqizë DP branch. The report addressed issues related to the implementation of the reform as a whole in this district, which is being sabotaged by PS representatives in local government. In their discussions, Messrs. Bashkim Lame, Avni Alliu, Safet Zhulali, Besnik Krosi, Azem Hajdari, Agim Kacani, Ymer Pervizi, Lesh Doci, Imi Koxha, Xhetan Ndërgjioni, Haki Dema, and Shemi Sadllari spoke about various problems facing the Bulqizë DP branch, the progress of the reform, its results, and the good work done by the leadership and democratic representatives in local government and the district’s enterprises. The conference was greeted by the chairman of the PR’s Bulqizë branch, Mr. Seiti Paci, and Isuf Miha, a former member of the Party of Labour who has distanced himself from the PS. At the end, the chairman of the PDSH, Mr. Eduard Selami, took the floor. The conference elected the new Governing Council of the Bulqizë branch and Mr. Latif Dema as branch chairman. MENTOR SHEHU

For several days, the ships «Ranger», carrying 17,060 tons of wheat, and «Apollonia Najad», carrying 5,000 tons of flour, have been unloading at the port of Durrës; the aid is from the European Community. The unloading of the ship «Dynamic Horizon», which has brought 12,849 tons of wheat, is expected to begin in the coming days; this aid is also from the European Community.

— Neither Alessi nor the mafia will prevent crime from being punished in Albania — When the socialist leader faced a prison cell, Italian MP Alessi appeared on the scene. His statement in the Italian Parliament, and the balloons handed to the Italian Embassy in Tirana by people who are all friends and associates of his in Nano’s circle, brought him into play as an advocate for the crime of corruption. This took concrete form in an obvious attempt to shift the focus of public attention and create the illusion that corruption is the foundation of the Democratic Government and that it has failed. But Albanian justice, through its recent actions, through “building a shelter” for many former senior financial officials, and through its insistence on summoning as witnesses some former officials of the Italian Embassy to testify about everything they did in Albania, has ensured that the Italian Alessi and his friends in Albania now have nothing but burst balloons in their hands. After these balloons burst, socialist, Nanoist missionaries (the latest being Zeneli, Abdiu, Çuçi), funded with the money from corruption, set off across Europe to portray their leader as a victim, as a martyr. They set off to denigrate Albania and its current government, and to prevent its admission to the Council of Europe. They set off, then, to defend Nano, but in fact they set off to defend themselves as his collaborators in financial corruption and other old and new crimes. Alessi tried to help them, just as Cardilleti and others have helped them. Nevertheless, the Alessis and Cardilletis cannot in any way overshadow the Albanian people’s gratitude to that Italian and the Italian government for the assistance they have given the Albanian people in extremely difficult circumstances. What has failed in Albania, Mr. Alessi, is not the Democratic Government, but corruption, crime, deception, and vile political manipulation. No one is immune from being held accountable before the law. Let the advocates of crime continue on their way, but the law in Albania will grow stronger every day, creating a suffocating atmosphere for crime and corruption of every color. SHPETIM LUKU

In an article published a few days ago in «RD» concerning the arrest of the President of the ADA AIR company, several questions were raised that followed logically from the facts presented in the article. Mr. Skëndo’s lawyer protested to the editorial office, calling the article based on unsupported insinuations. Meanwhile, «ZP» reacted, as always, sensitively when the “red families” are touched upon. I made this introduction because I intend to provide another fact and repeat one of my questions. According to reliable sources who do not wish to be identified, two days before M. Skëndo was arrested (on the charge that is now known), Sokol Hoxha, son of Enver Hoxha, asked to meet with him. Sokol Hoxha went to the offices of ADA AIR and asked to meet its President, M. Skëndo. E. Hoxha’s son did not introduce himself, but he is not an unknown figure. Skëndo was not at that moment in the company’s offices where Hoxha had gone, so Hoxha was escorted to the company’s other offices. According to the information, S. Hoxha did not manage to meet M. Skëndo. Why? What did Hoxha want to discuss with Skëndo? The fact that this meeting was requested only two days before Skëndo’s arrest may be a coincidence, but perhaps it was not. I do not know whether lawyer Totozani will allow me, this time too, to ask the question without making accusations: “Did ADA AIR’s tentacles reach the red families?” Note: After the above article was announced, members of M. Skëndo’s family and ADA AIR employees asked to clarify this fact. According to Lila Pojani, Skëndo’s secretary, it is true that S. Hoxha asked to meet M. Skëndo two days before the arrest, but he (Skëndo) refused to meet him. According to Pojani, the reason for the “visit” was simply a telex machine, which Hoxha had sent to Skëndo to be repaired, but which had been forgotten in some corner. Meanwhile, Skëndo’s relatives claim that S. Hoxha’s visit may have been deliberate, specifically to create problems for Skëndo. EDI PALOKA

The 500 articles defending Nano, the thousands of lies, fables, absurd deceptions and fabrications in the communist newspaper «ZP» concerning the scandal of the theft of Italian aid granted to Albania clearly show that the PS and «ZP» suffer from the chronic disease of the chairman’s cult, from the psychological trauma of falling into the vortex of crime. This has caused the communist instincts of the propaganda campaigns of Enver’s era—when, regrettably, only «ZP» was allowed—to awaken again this autumn and bring their illness to the surface. «ZP», this ultra-communist newspaper, has never managed to create an independent journalistic backbone. Throughout its existence it has remained engaged first in building Enver’s cult, then Ramiz’s cult, and now Fatos’s cult. It is a rare case in the history of world journalism for an entire newspaper to be placed in the service of one individual for three months in a row, as this newspaper has done with F. Nano. This well-known Enverist method has not only irritated readers, but has brought the greatest discredit upon the PS itself, which has been flattened according to the Marxist-Leninist principle of identifying the party with its chairman. But a party symbolized by a former chairman being tried for ordinary crimes means that this organization is either on the verge of disintegration or under a Stalinist dictatorship; what could be more similar? The first thing that strikes you in the «ZP» collection is deception, elevated to an art, as the sole means of overcoming this communist malaise. It continues to deceive at every level concerning human rights, falsifying facts and data without a single document, without a single piece of evidence. [Unclear text] Whoever is in Albania knows this is a burst balloon. After these balloons burst, socialist and Nanoist missionaries (most recently Zeneli, Abdiu, Çuçi), financed with money from corruption, set off across Europe to present their chairman as a victim, as someone whose fundamental freedoms of work, property, belief, movement and existence are guaranteed. Particularly regarding minority rights, where even for 2–3 pupils there is a Greek school in minority areas. «ZP» continues to falsify things in the vilest way, claiming that the rights of the opposition have been violated and citing banal facts about phenomena such as unemployment, social assistance, etc., to which all Albanians are equally exposed. The spokesmen for 50 years of crime feel shaken because they have lost a job, while around 1 million Albanians have no home, no family, no youth, no work, no life; because these were taken from them in a macabre way under [illegible]… These «ZP» people were former dictators who controlled the State Security; who locked most Albanians away in prisons and in inhuman camps. «ZP», this leader of 50 years of crime, which toyed with human rights, is now striking the pose of an innocent criminal. Gentlemen Communists, today nobody accepts your repentance or your reform. It is in the interest of the democratic state that criminals like you be brought to justice as liars and falsifiers, as violators of human rights for 50 years and creators of psychological terror. This would be the greatest service to democracy and, especially, to the protection of human rights. Because if society is not protected from criminals such as these Communists, who hated humanity and have crime in their genes, it would mean exposing it to them again in the future. This was a victory not only for the Bulqizë DP, but for the entire DP and all democratic forces; it was of national importance to us. The goals the DP set for itself are on the right track, even though there are problems and difficulties. Our main priority was restructuring the DP at every level, while focusing on the sections as the basic units of the DP’s organizational structure.
