Empty propaganda cannot bring down Nano
- Nano’s trial was declared in the Democratic Party in early February, more than two months ago.
- Nano’s lawyers continue to invent procedural difficulties - the case file was sent back for further investigations, but in order to bring a new charge: “misappropriation”
In truth, the people’s truths, the court with all its levels, and the Albanian justice system are working according to the law, regardless of what street propaganda says. To be honest, we must say that the Nano case deserves careful examination because it has aroused considerable interest. This is not because it is at the center of the opposition press’s attention, but because it presents a special case. In the Albanian courts so far, as far as is known, no such case has been brought. Because it is not simply a man who is being tried, but a former prime minister. That makes everyone sensitive. Now much revolves around an accusation that is considered unproven. At least that is what Fatos Nano’s defense lawyers say. But up to now this fact has been considered normal, even by the Minister of Justice and by the General Prosecutor’s Office. On other occasions, when for various reasons the prosecution has not prepared the case files properly, it has withdrawn them again in order to review them. The truth is that only Nano’s file is being commented on with such insistence, but that is not a sin in itself. On the contrary, the transparency of this process, in respect of pluralism and freedom of the press, may also be considered an indicator of democracy in Albania.
On the other hand, it is understandable that one cannot try a former prime minister of the country without bringing proper arguments and without being fully convinced of the bringing of the charge. Therefore this case is being handled with special care and attention. As the Prosecutor General has also stated, further expert examinations are expected to determine precisely the economic damage caused. Meanwhile, one cannot remain silent in the face of the fact that opposition propaganda continues to make noise with slander. It creates the impression that Nano’s trial has been thrown out. The truth is quite different. The file was returned for the completion of the investigations, which is a procedure well known in judicial practice.
Moreover, the very fact that the case is being examined in a regular, public process refutes all accusations that this is a matter of political revenge. It is not propaganda that decides, but the court. And the court cannot be replaced by speeches in squares, by hasty statements, or by the noise of the street. Therefore, anyone who tries to present the return of the file as a failure of justice is doing nothing other than attempting to manipulate public opinion.
