In an absurd act, this man, who himself does not know what he represents, dares to discuss an Albanian government meeting with the US government, calling it a “conspiracy”, while at the same time tying himself to the most absurd speculation, that the Albanian president allegedly launched an unprecedented offensive against parliament. To say such a thing about the entire press of yesterday clearly shows by what principles and ethics this kind of politicians operates. As for the denunciations of “pressure” on the constitutional court, they are just as ridiculous as their other claim. At the same time, the very same voices that speak of “pressure” do not find a single word for the repeated threatening statements of the “22 March” type against the constitutional court itself. In other words, for them it is legitimate to threaten institutions when this serves their politics and unacceptable for any reaction to slander. This kind of mentality, which is becoming the way of thinking of part of the PS leadership, is nothing other than a continuation of the old logic of class struggle, transferred into the conditions of pluralism. Fatos Nano, Luan Hajdaraga and perhaps one or two others are demonstrating day by day more clearly that they have not broken with the totalitarian past. That is why they continue to use the same language of hatred, the same pattern of accusations and the same way of seeing the opponent as an enemy. Instead of behaving as a modern opposition, they act as heirs of a historically failed force. In these conditions, the PS is moving not toward reform, but toward self-destruction. The more it is dominated by its extremists, the fewer chances it has to present a credible alternative. And this is bad not only for the PS itself, but for Albanian political life as a whole.

BONHARD AND BONFIER President Berisha received Mr. Tiofiler Bonhard and Mr. Piter Bonfier The meeting with them last evening, one day before their departure, with the two members of the German Bundestag Dr. Tiofiler Bonhard and Dr. Piter Bonfier (respectively secretary of the CDU-CSU parliamentary group and secretary of the parliamentary subcommittee on foreign relations) took place in a very warm and friendly atmosphere. President Berisha thanked Mr. Bonhard and Mr. Bonfier for their visit to Albania, for the assistance being provided by Germany and the German Bundestag, as well as for their personal interest in Albania's problems. The two German MPs expressed their satisfaction with the democratic transformations in our country and praised the progress made on the road of reforms. They stressed that Albania has clearly and definitively demonstrated its Western orientation and that this is an important guarantee for its European future. The discussion also covered bilateral relations, economic aid and developments in the region. President Berisha underlined that Albania is interested in expanding cooperation with Germany in all fields and in supporting its integration into European structures. The interlocutors expressed their belief that cooperation between the two countries will be further strengthened.

From the Salimi-Bovard meeting The Speaker of the Albanian parliament, Mr. Servet Pëllumbi[?] / Salimi[?], received yesterday the Swiss MP ... Bovard. The meeting discussed the political situation in the country, the progress of democratic and economic reforms, as well as regional problems. The interlocutors assessed the importance of support for Albania in maintaining peace and stability in the region. The Swiss MP expressed interest in developments in Albania and underlined that his country will continue to follow with attention the democratic processes in our country. The Albanian side expressed its determination to carry forward reforms and strengthen democratic institutions. The meeting also touched on bilateral cooperation and economic assistance.

The President of the Republic, Mr. Sali Berisha, sent a condolence telegram to the family of the academic and poetic writer Zef Skiroi in Sicily, Italy, on the occasion of his death The condolence telegram says: Dear Mr. President, with deep sorrow I learned of the loss of the distinguished Arbëresh academic and poet Zef Skiroi. His name and work are a precious part of our national culture and of the spiritual links between Albania and the Arbëresh of Italy. The statement continues: “On 9 March, Serbian forces entered the building of the Academy and the Student Center, forcibly removed the staff and sealed the offices. The Academy of Sciences of Kosovo will remain a public institution and its activity will continue regardless of obstacles.” The statement strongly condemns this act and calls for the intervention of international opinion. AFP reports that the incident has caused widespread indignation among Albanian intellectuals in Kosovo.
