According to all indications (as is understood?), today it is difficult to find a 1 April in the communist calendar without a “lie” concocted by the party. Therefore, accidentally or not, one of the loudest recent events in Tirana is precisely that of the “file” of 2 April. This file, kept for years closed and obscured, returns again as evidence, as memory, and as an open political wound. In the first rows of it are mentioned well-known names of the left and of the old apparatus: Alfred Uçi, Alia, Nano, Ruçi. The polemic over 2 April is not only about the memory of the victims, but also about attempts to hide political and moral responsibilities. Many have wanted to present the event as a random incident, but the testimonies, documents, and voices of the time show a heavier truth. The 2 April file thus remains proof of the relationship that Albanian politics has with the past: one part seeks to open it, another to close it, while the victims’ families seek justice.
