THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA REQUESTS THAT THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL CONDEMN THE GREEK GOVERNMENT SEVERELY AND PLACE IT AMONG THOSE THAT PRACTICE STATE TERRORISM
Letter from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfred Serreqi, addressed to Colin Keating, President of the UN Security Council
Letter from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfred Serreqi, addressed to Colin Keating,
President of the UN Security Council
Your Excellency Mr. Colin Keating,
President of the UN Security Council
Your Excellency,
Allow me to address you regarding the Greek terrorist act, dated 10.4.1994, against an Albanian border post where Captain Fatmir Shehu of the Albanian army was killed and two other military personnel were wounded.
The Albanian government considers this armed attack, organized and supported by Greek government structures and ultranationalist armed forces, to be a flagrant act of aggression, a violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Albania and of the norms of international law.
The way the government in Athens has handled this event, its efforts to minimize it and to prevent the truth from being brought to light, make it directly responsible before international opinion.
We request that the Security Council strongly condemn the Greek government and place it among those that practice state terrorism.
In this context, the Albanian government calls on the United Nations and all international organizations to take the necessary measures to guarantee the security of the borders of the Republic of Albania and to prevent the repetition of such criminal acts.
The Government of the Republic of Albania considers it essential to send an international verification mission to the area of the incident, in order to determine responsibilities and document the violations.
We express our conviction that silence or the relativization of this crime would encourage extremist forces in the region and create a dangerous precedent for peace and stability.
Respectfully,
Alfred Serreqi
