PRESIDENT BERISHA RECEIVES THE COMMANDER OF U.S. FORCES IN EUROPE AND COMMANDER OF NATO AIR FORCES IN CENTRAL EUROPE

NATO's persistent demand that, in the democratization process, priority be given to parliament shows that the alliance does not consider the process of building a legal state and a functioning democratic system to be completed in Albania . That was the general opinion of analysts yesterday in Tirana, after President Sali Berisha's meeting with the commander of U.S. military forces in Europe and commander of NATO air forces for Central Europe, General Ronald Fogleman. The official statement says that Mr. Berisha told General Fogleman that Albania highly valued cooperation with the U.S. and NATO, considering it of special importance for national security and stability in the region. The President of the Republic pointed out that Albania is moving decisively along the road of democratic and economic reforms and that Albanian political forces are engaged in strengthening democratic institutions. General Fogleman, for his part, praised the positive developments in Albania and stressed NATO's interest in supporting democratic processes and stability in the country. He underlined the importance of strengthening the role of parliament and state institutions in the framework of consolidating the rule of law. The discussion also addressed military cooperation, the modernization of defense structures, and the prospects for Albania's relations with the Atlantic alliance.
