WHAT DID NANO AND ALIA TALK ABOUT IN PRISON BEFORE GOING TO COURT?
-The first meeting before Nano’s trial
-2 April: Was a joke one of the topics of conversation?
-A photograph from a visit in Durrës that Alia and Nano once took together [?]
So what did the former party leaders talk about?
During the last two weeks before being sent to the prison detention block, Ramiz Alia and Fatos Nano met with each other for the first time. Their joint meetings made possible, for the first time, communication between two people who considered each other political rivals. Witnesses, and often participants in the conversations between them, were also the cellmates. Fatos Nano, in order to make his accounts of the meetings and conversations with Fatos Nano known to the Albanian public, asked “RD” to publish them. He did this with the sole aim of giving public opinion the right to know the truths hidden by official propaganda. In the series “The Truth Speaks,” Nano is presenting these conversations with Alia. According to him, these conversations say a great deal about the real relations between the two political figures of the transition period.
Shkodër – 25 April. The courtroom of Gjon Shllaku, where the final hearing of Nano and Vranici’s “symbolic” trial was to be held, packed to the brim with family members, friends, and well-wishers of the defendants, was filled with tension. Fatos Nano, arriving in the cell after his long testimony, expressed the desire to meet Ramiz Alia. At first the guard refused. A little later, with the intervention of prison officials, the meeting was allowed. The two sat on a small bench in the prison yard. According to those present, Alia began the conversation in a gentle tone. Nano directly questioned him about many political issues of recent years. The conversation focused on the events of 2 April, relations between the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, the political responsibilities of the past, and the court proceedings that were underway. Alia spoke at length about his position in the final years of communist rule, while Nano often challenged him.
According to the testimonies gathered, one of the most striking moments of the conversation was when an old photograph taken in Durrës was mentioned, in which Nano and Alia had appeared together. This photograph, according to sources, was used as a reminder of a time when relations between them were completely different. Those present recall that Nano told Alia that history could not be covered up with silence. Alia, for his part, remained calm and tried to avoid direct answers.
The publication of these accounts, according to Nano, aims to shed light on the hidden truths of a decisive period for Albania.
