The majority supports PDSH
The poll results show:
- Implementation of the PD contract with the electorate - Achievements of the democratic government during '95 - The success of President Berisha’s visits to New York, Brussels, Italy, and the UN Headquarters - Support for Albania’s integration policy in Euro-Atlantic structures - An increase in living standards, higher wages, security and order, the use of securities - Support for the genocide law - Destabilization of the PS anti-reform platform - The lack of alternatives in the PS - Raising awareness about the containment that powerful personalities are exercising over the PS and about the danger of its coming to power - The exposure of the political path of the PS leaders - Destabilization of the “auntie” with F. Nano, of the fight against reformers within the PS, the failure of the Marxist leader - The failure of the PS electoral headquarters campaign The study carried out by the opinion-poll groups of the Faculty of Sociology-Philology has become known to the public. Very important for the development of reforms in Albania is the fact that the democratic government, the government that has taken responsibility for carrying them out, enjoys the support of the majority of citizens. Thus 65% consider the government’s domestic policy successful. In addition to the assessment of the work of the democratic government, this figure gives the government confidence to continue reforms and deepen them further. Support for the government’s foreign policy is broader, almost unanimous. Thus over 90% value Albania’s accession to the Council of Europe and consider it an aid to the development of democracy and well-being in Albania. Likewise, 70% feel confident about the government’s policy toward NATO and the USA, confidence that is linked to preventing the spread of the conflict from the former Yugoslavia to our country. Thus all the critical voices coming from the opposition in this direction do not enjoy support. (Continues on page 2)
Wolfensohn: “I am impressed by Albania’s rapid progress”
The President of the World Bank, Wolfensohn, at a press conference
We are impressed by Albania’s great progress, the low level of inflation, the significant increase in production and, let us say it openly, the transition from a very difficult system to an open society
- We will help the government as much as we can and as far as it depends on us, if such a thing is requested of us. We are proud of this fruitful partnership - You have moved forward in a very short time - If you have production growth of 10% a year, that is a satisfactory figure. It is the highest figure among transition economies - Progress is noticeable. Every day, every week you can see the changes - YOU MUST HAVE FAITH Yesterday, in one of the halls of the “Rogner” hotel, James Wolfensohn, President of the WB, gave a press conference for journalists from various media outlets. In his opening remarks, Mr. Wolfensohn said: I want to thank President and Mrs. Berisha, the Albanian Government, Mr. Vrioni, Mr. Shehi, all Albanians for their warm hospitality during my visit to Albania. We had very fruitful discussions with government authorities, various non-governmental organizations, colleagues from the United Nations Committee and representatives of the private sector. During my visit I also had the opportunity to go to the village of Herraj, which is one of the 85 villages where we have a program for agricultural loans. I also visited a school and a health center. I came to Albania because I have great confidence in what is being done here. All of this continues (Continues on page 2)
We are doing the best that can be done
Mr. Wolfensohn notes, the opposition denies
Albania continues to be the shining land of many personalities in the world. As soon as one arrives, another comes, thus confirming the important fact that Albania’s bilateral or multilateral cooperation with Europe — with the world — has been greatly strengthened. Albania is no longer the isolated or forgotten country. On the contrary, it is now a supported country, a country integrated into various international organizations. James Wolfensohn, President of a prestigious financial institution, also came to Albania. He came to see Albania, to see what institutions he leads have done here, and to judge what he may be able to do in the future. And, guided by the realism that characterizes every distinguished personality, he made several statements which should also stimulate realistic feelings in those Albanians who are deprived of them. Mr. Wolfensohn said he is impressed by Albania’s rapid progress. This obvious and shared observation by us Albanians, who have lived under opposite systems, is quite clear. The opposition does not accept this change. Mr. Wolfensohn said we are on the right road and that we must have faith in this system, live with it. Meanwhile the opposition, led by the left-wing extremists, the PS Marxists, tries to create the illusion that nothing is going well in Albania. Its leaders go around European circles spreading dissatisfaction and a climate of doubt among foreign personalities. Yet when they come to Albania, they observe the opposite of the reports they had been forced to hear. Mr. Wolfensohn, like many statesmen and leaders of other organizations, emphasized more than once the determination to continue, strengthen and deepen cooperation with Albania. This, among other things, is also a way of ultimately proving that we are on the right road. But the left opposition has had the word “no” stuck in its mouth; it is also the language of Anti-PD strategy. Mr. Wolfensohn was quite satisfied with the implementation of the projects, whereas the opposition used them for slander; the ZP journalists remained silent. I do not know whether the author is trying to extract some statement on which they would operate according to their interests. The enthusiasm, compliments and observations of Wolfensohn formed for some an unwelcome and evidenced backdrop to expose their malicious propaganda as a bluff. The World Bank President concluded his visit to Albania. In addition to the appreciation generated by the visit, it was also meaningful in another respect. It helped us value the essence that we are moving ahead with the best that can be done. We simply must be proud.
Berisha: - Albania is grateful to you for the historic help you gave and continue to give. Wolfensohn: - You have made efforts and have been rewarded with very great successes
President Berisha receives the President of the World Bank, Mr. James Wolfensohn
President Berisha stated that the visit of the President of the World Bank is a very important event for the development of the close cooperation that Albania has with the World Bank. Albania is grateful to you for the historic help you gave and continue to give. Our beginning was difficult, but we were determined to build a market economy and the rule of law, and now we can happily state that Albania has the most dynamic indicators of economic development among the countries of the East, which draws attention and commitment to the deep reform process so as to preserve these rates of development. In this framework we are determined to continue cooperation with the World Bank, and I believe that this cooperation scheme has produced results. President Berisha said that we are very pleased with the cooperation with the World Bank and that these projects bring together all sectors that are of interest, human resources, infrastructure, and the fight against poverty. Cooperation with the World Bank is regarded as a model of cooperation. President Berisha asked President Wolfensohn for the support of the World Bank for the West-East corridor project, which is of very great economic and political importance, a project that will not only open a market for the Balkans, but will also bring the countries of the Balkans closer to one another, as well as to Europe. President Wolfensohn thanked them for the hospitality and said: “We are fascinated by the progress” and the wonderful indicators you have achieved. I want to congratulate you on the support and the will to make decisions in creating a (Continues on page 2)
The authors of the poll at the Faculty of Sociology are threatened
“ZP” journalists do not want to fall below their bosses
Immediately after the publication of the poll results carried out by groups of specialists at the Faculty of Philology and Sociology, journalists from “ZP” descended on the Faculty. Up to this point everything would have been fine: the journalists of “ZP” hurried to verify whether the published poll was real or fabricated like the last one. Very quickly the militants learned that there are groups within the Faculty itself that deal with such studies, and that the polling groups, especially the group that, seeing the great “interest” of the militant journalists of “ZP”, has also distributed an explanation to the rest of the press: “We inform you that the group that carried out the survey consists of: 1- Doctor of Sciences Aleksander Kocani, sociologist, director and statistics specialist 2- Kliti Ceca, mathematician, statistician. The group also includes students from the Faculties of Philology, Social Sciences, Economics, etc.” — it says in this explanation. Having failed in their mission, the “braves” of “ZP” decided to follow the example of their bosses, so they were not satisfied with the role of journalist. Having failed to prove the falsity of the poll results, the journalists of “ZP” began to utter threatening words against the authors, “warning” that one day they would pay for what they had done. So now, in addition to the list of PD authors whom the heads of the PS have threatened to imprison, independent groups of researchers and students have also been added. Perhaps very soon the PS bozos will threaten that after their victory in Albania only socialists will live normally. That would truly be tragic if it were not comic. The people have said: “Let the dogs bark. The caravan moves on.” But the dogs would do well not to stand in front of the caravan. E. PALOKA
