Selim Belortaja: According to the data we have, the total inflow of capital into Albania by the end of 1994 amounted to more than 200 million dollars, with an increase of 42 percent compared with the end of 1993. Likewise, 1994 saw a significant increase in the number of enterprises with foreign capital. At present, the number of these companies reaches 2,660. From our analysis, compared with the end of 1993, there is a shift of investments into several new branches. So, alongside trade, tourism, and the food industry, investment has also been drawn into other sectors, such as textiles, wood processing, building materials, beverage production, computer services, etc. “RD”: Does the business climate in Albania influence these developments? Selim Belortaja: Of course. Macroeconomic stability, the new economic legislation, and the improvement of relations with international institutions have created a more favorable environment for foreign investors. However, there is still much to be done, especially in infrastructure, administration, and the banking system. “RD”: In which directions does the government aim to further encourage investments? Selim Belortaja: First of all, production, services, tourism, and new technologies. It is important that foreign capital not be concentrated only in trade, but also enter sectors that create jobs and increase exports. “RD”: How do you see the year 1995? Selim Belortaja: I am optimistic about the flow of foreign investments, if we continue reforms and create legal certainty for entrepreneurs.
