Albanians, you wait with deep gratitude, Mr. Van Den Broek!

SAMI REPISHTI Dear van den Broek, ladies and gentlemen, The European Union is an economic and political community of free countries, with a market economy, devoted to the principles of personal freedom, representative government, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental human rights. Today, on behalf of the Albanian government, you have come to Tirana to express “the support of the European Union for the efforts of the Albanian government to successfully complete reforms toward the creation of a democratic society”. At the invitation of the government and in clear opposition to the interests of the Albanian government and of the great majority of the Albanian population, the President of the Republic, Ramiz Alia, on 10 April 1991 invited Serbian soldiers and, indeed, a unit of tanks to Tirana. Why? As a reward to that part of Albanian opinion? But who among you? And which Serbian call have you believed? [? ] As in the other countries of postwar Europe, today in Albania too political freedom and economic reforms came after the collapse of the communist system. For decades Albanians have tried to restore to their country its European identity, violently severed from it since the Second World War. Today, for the first time in history, free Albanians want to find their natural place in the family of civilized European nations. Today and [unclear] sadly, they have the right to ask: why are they being asked to forget their suffering under communism, the terror, poverty, isolation, and now not to speak about the crimes committed by those who built and defended that system? Why, in the name of “stability,” must they remain silent in the face of attempts to bring back onto the scene the old figures of repression? Support for Albanian democracy cannot be confused with concessions to those who fought against it. Nor can reconciliation be built on denial of the truth. The Albanian people know very well what they have endured and who is responsible. If Europe wants a stable Albania, it must support democratic forces, not old nostalgia. Free Albanians love Europe, but not a Europe that preaches principles and violates them in practice. This is why many Albanians welcome you with respect, but also with concern. Gratitude cannot be blind, and trust is earned through just attitudes toward freedom, democracy, and national dignity.
