Association with the EU is our major interest of the Albanian government for the years ahead. This was one of the conclusions yesterday of the meeting held by the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, with the President of the Council of Europe, Klaus Hans van den Broek, and the European Union Commissioner for external relations, Hans van den Broek[?].
Dr. Berisha described Van den Broek’s visit to Albania as "very fruitful" and said that it was taking place at a time when Albania is working firmly for its integration into Euro-Atlantic structures. An important part of the talks with the EU representatives, the Albanian president said, concerned economic relations, participation in the democratization process, and support for economic reforms.
"The progress and achievements of our reforms have been important, but we are still at the beginning of the road and we need their help," President Berisha said.
According to the President of the EC, the positive attitude toward democratic and economic reforms in Albania, as well as support for the pace of these reforms, also determines the further constructive stance, encouraging the country on the path of reform. He stressed that association and talks will begin within a period of 2 years.

The chairman of the presidium of the conference of popular chairmen, Mr. Albert Brojka, presented the situation that had arisen in Tirana. According to him, the Albanian opposition is following a confrontational path and is trying to create artificial tension in political life. He said that the European Union values institutional stability and the pace of reforms.
I do not think that political parties are lacking in this country, he said, but that what is lacking is a culture of dialogue among some opposition leaders. He added that criticism from European partners is useful when it helps the country move forward, but not when it is exploited for internal propaganda.
The President of the Republic stressed that Albania has taken important steps toward integration and that the country must work seriously on democratic standards.
