Austria supports Albania

President of the Republic of Austria Dr. Tomas Klestil and the delegation accompanying him Yesterday the President of the Republic of Austria, Tomas Klestil, arrived for his official visit to Albania. At Rinas Airport, the Austrian President was received by his Albanian counterpart, Mr. Sali Berisha. After the two countries’ anthems and the presentation of the delegations, President Berisha and his guest headed to the Palace of Brigades, where a state ceremony was held in his honor. The Austrian President’s state visit comes as a concrete contribution to Albanian-Austrian relations and as a further stimulus for their intensification. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Austria was the venue where the Albanian and Austrian Presidents, Sali Berisha and Tomas Klestil, addressed yesterday the elite of local and Austrian business. Opening the conference, President Berisha stressed that the Albanian government’s priority remains the privatization of telecommunications, banks, oil, and mines, and called for the participation of Austrian business in this process. “An important task of the Albanian government,” said President Berisha, “also remains fiscal reform and the modernization of public administration. Economic cooperation with Austria is a major encouraging factor for the Albanian economy.” Assuring foreign businessmen of the stability of the business climate in Albania, President Berisha emphasized in particular that after the constitutional referendum the country has entered a phase of greater political maturity. He praised the positive role Austria has played in strengthening Albania’s relations with the European Union. President Berisha said that Albania is deeply grateful to Austria for all its friendly positions toward our country. He particularly underlined that the support Austria has given Albania for membership in the Council of Europe shows its consistent commitment to promoting democracy and stability in our country and the region. At this meeting, Austrian President Tomas Klestil also spoke, describing Albania as a country with great potential and expressing Austria’s interest in expanding investment and economic cooperation.
