The best way to forget the past is to build the future
Prof. Ylli VEISIU
Member of the Presidency of PSDH
TIRANA - It is hard to recall a foreign personality who received a warmer, more sincere, more interested and more respectful welcome than the one given to the President of the Republic, Doctor Thomas Klestil, during his official visit to our country. Alongside the warmth, naturalness, courtesy and admirable correctness that accompanied this reception, what stood out was the broad range of appreciation for him not only in the highest state and governmental institutions but also from many personalities of Albanian political and intellectual life. Many people addressed the President of Austria with requests for an audience and talks, in which they expressed sincere congratulations and high regard.
Why not say it: this happened not only out of respect for the office he holds, but also out of gratitude for what he represents, for his advanced, realistic and democratic political views. Among all Western countries, Austria is one of the most liked and respected in Albania. It is not among the richest countries or those with the strongest economies on our continent, but it is among the most humane countries, with a more advanced political culture and a higher spirit of tolerance toward difference, closer to the Albanian people, ready to stand by them in difficult times. President Klestil gave a valuable example of this friendship and of this balanced European position.
In his public remarks and in conversations with the leaders of our country, he spoke of a sincere relationship, the need to strengthen economic, cultural and political cooperation, and of a European future for Albania. This assessment of his, expressed with dignity, has special importance for our country in a period of great transformations.
A people that suffers for a long time from the wounds of history cannot live only with memories of the past. The best way to forget the past is to build the future. This applies both to relations between peoples and to our internal political and social life. That is where the message we must draw from this visit lies.
