Freedom offers great opportunities, so let us all make use of them

The President of the Republic Sali Berisha in the Shkodër district MINXHOX SHAHU During his visit to the Shkodër district, the President of the Republic, Dr. Sali Berisha, stopped in the commune of Bushat, where the reconstruction of the Shkodër-Lezhë road was inaugurated. During his conversation with the commune’s residents, the head of state stressed that under conditions of freedom citizens must give the maximum of their contribution. If we want a rapid improvement in people’s living conditions, if we want full well-being, we must invest. Only in those places where investment was made and people worked did the greatest changes occur. In our country, in every field, we are being firmly led toward change and progress. These are reforms and transformations. You should take advantage of the opportunities of freedom, because the opportunities created today will not be the same in five years. That has been the case in all other countries of Europe and beyond. You are an energetic people and must continue along this path with greater determination and enthusiasm. Your greatest and most persistent demand is to create the best possible conditions for business, but also for overall progress, since private enterprises, common wealth and business create well-being for everyone. Mr. Berisha said that the achievements of the Bushat commune are appreciable. But we have major problems that must be solved continuously. The greatest difficulties, President Berisha said, continue to be water supply, the building of schools, and the construction of houses. But these are not unsolvable problems; they are problems that can only be solved through work. They can also be successfully solved in the Bushat commune if work is carried out with determination. President Berisha went on to say that the state and the government are giving Albanians the opportunity to build their lives freely, to secure the necessary means of livelihood through their labor and sweat. This is the most just and honorable path, because human life and work are the most precious values mankind possesses. This is being shown very clearly in Albania as well, where great opportunities are being created for everyone to build a better life for themselves and their families. The head of state then stopped in the village of Gril, where he inaugurated the reconstructed eight-year school and took part in a rally organized on that occasion. At this meeting President Berisha said that people should work with greater courage to develop the country and move forward on the road of democratic transformations. The waters of freedom can be made fruitful through work. Let us use freedom, because history does not wait, and this is in the best interest of the inhabitants of this district, but also of the country as a whole. Rightly, the residents of this village have invested in themselves, with their own strength. Let us move on the right path, and you are doing this by giving education for children the importance it deserves. He warmly greeted the school staff and its students. The President of the Republic later also inaugurated the building of a health center in the village of Pentar and then at the commune center. In conclusion, while valuing the local governance of this commune, he said that the work done speaks more truthfully than speeches about the country’s situation. What matters, the president emphasized, is that time should not be wasted on things that can be done today, but are sometimes neglected for various reasons. Going forward in our country, healthcare must advance alongside education, the economy and all other fields. This will bring essential changes to the future of our country.

The future is not built without erasing the shadows of the past

Italian Socialist Party leaders: the initiative to condemn Enverian genocide must be given a name, a surname and a decision VLORA After 50 years Albania experienced the day of freedom, but it must make continuous efforts to overcome the totalitarian past and rebuild itself as a democratic country, because the communist legacy still continues. This was stated by Mr. Piero Fassino, coordinator of the PDS secretariat, at the meeting with the chairman of the Albanian Social Democratic Forum in Vlora, Mr. Vilson Ahmeti. Also attending the meeting was Mr. Giuseppe Frigo, whom Mr. Fassino introduced as one of the best specialists in the Italian constitution and currently in the opposition as chairman of the Legal Commission for the Italia-1 referendum. After informing his interlocutors about the resolution of the Social Democratic parliamentary group and the draft law for the condemnation of the crimes of communism and the genocide carried out by that regime, as well as the content of the draft for the rehabilitation of the politically persecuted, the chairman of the Albanian Social Democratic Forum, Mr. Vilson Ahmeti, asked Italy for help in recognizing and raising awareness among international public opinion about the political repression and genocide carried out by the communist regime in Albania. “If we forget all this, from political trials, the repression of the intelligentsia and the inhuman acts and punishments against the thousands of opponents of the regime, who for 50 years were killed, imprisoned, interned and persecuted, then it cannot be understood what an irresponsible and inhuman regime communism was,” said Mr. Ahmeti. “To forget means, willingly or unwillingly, to help its return. We are in favor of a social pact even with former communists and State Security employees who were not direct executors and did not order acts of violence, but without setting aside the criminals. This means not revenge but awareness and sensitization for a real freedom, without the fear of repeating the past.” At the meeting, the coordinator of the PDS secretariat, Mr. Piero Fassino, praised the resolution and the draft law, calling it “a political development of extraordinary value in Albania, very important and of European significance at a time when we are trying to build new democratic societies.” Speaking about the condemnation of the genocide carried out by the communist regime in Albania, Mr. Fassino said that “every people is free to judge itself on the basis of its own history. In any case, no temptation should be created whereby, in the name of erasing the past, it is not condemned. We in Italy are doing something similar for fascism.” Assessing the events and specific conditions of Albania, he said that “I am convinced that when such a genocide is condemned, conditions are created so that such a tragedy will never be repeated. Above all, the conditions that favor nostalgia and manifestations of hatred and revenge, which hinder the building of democracy, must be overcome. This is done first of all by condemning those who were involved in crimes.” Mr. Fassino also addressed issues concerning the Albanian left, stressing that “all former communists must reflect on their role and responsibilities.” Speaking about relations between Albania and Italy, he said that “what matters are the relations between countries, regardless of governments and occasions, because relations between countries are the result of the efforts of generations. There is no time or place for rhetoric.” Speaking about stability in the region, Mr. Fassino, when also asked about Kosovo, stated that “this issue too must be resolved through peaceful instruments, recognizing the identity of all parties.” Mr. Vilson Ahmeti, after mentioning the presidency and the mutual support that left-wing forces give one another in their respective countries and in the International, emphasized that “the unification of the Albanian left and the establishment of a clear identity can make it more attractive even to intellectuals who have moved away from it.” Appreciating the coherence and determination to denounce the political repression and genocide carried out by that regime, the former President of Albania, Dr. Sali Berisha, stopped in Bushat, where the reconstruction of the Shkodër-Lezhë road was inaugurated.[?]

Efforts to restore despotism

The last vestige of the Albanian nomenklatura fights by every means to discredit the force that represents, for the whole people and the intelligentsia, hope for the future By Mr. Minir Zajmi, chairman of the Christian Democratic Agrarian Party This staged smear campaign by PDSH against PSSH continued with the former head of State Security, with the interior minister and the minister of local government, as well as with the editor-in-chief of “Rilindja Demokratike,” with the former investigator of the “dictatorship of the proletariat” and with the director of TVSH. We now know very well where the order came from and who was chosen for this mission. The real aims of it have now also become clear. If the aim of this campaign has been and is the denigration of PSSH, the collapse of trust in a major opposition force and the failure of efforts to unify the Albanian left, the failure of efforts to integrate our political grouping into the Socialist International, if this is the aim, I think that on this path one cannot proceed without entering into open disagreement with the doctrine of social democracy and without risking complications in the future of relations with all the determined supporters of social democracy in Albania. To champion this campaign means to denigrate Albanian social democrats themselves and to ignore our country’s interests in integrating into Europe as quickly as possible. On 14 June 1995 in Vlora, in a meeting with the former president of the Council of Ministers of Italy, Mr. Pietro Fassino[?], the chairman of PSSH, Vilson Ahmeti, declared: “The initiative for the condemnation of Enverian genocide must be given a name, a surname and a decision,” while Mr. Fassino praised the resolution and the draft law as “a political development of extraordinary value in Albania.” At the same time, the determination to have as close a cooperation as possible with the Christian Democratic and Popular Party in Italy and with PSDI was also reaffirmed. The development of this policy threatens certain specific forces and circles. It is no coincidence that immediately after this meeting a new wave of attacks began against PSSH and against the initiative to condemn Enverian genocide. Those who try to stain public figures, manipulate opinion and bring back the spirit of blackmail and fear are precisely those who fear transparency, openness and European integration. Albania cannot move forward with police methods, slander and pressure. Political forces must compete with ideas, programs and public responsibility. Any attempt to use institutions, media or dark files to strike at the political opponent is a step backward and a bad service to Albanian democracy.

The request for Fatos Nano’s release from prison is rejected

The trial panel of the Tirana district court yesterday rejected the request of the chairman of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, for his release from prison. The civil plaintiff, the Bank of Albania, through its representative, lawyer Pashko, requested that the first-instance court’s decision be upheld. PSSH, which is not a party to this process, was not present. The only people who took part in the hearing were Fatos Nano himself and his defense lawyer. PSSH in this process made a separate request for release, but this was not accepted. Fatos Nano said that, since he was arrested for political reasons, he could not appear as an ordinary defendant. Parts of the investigative file were also read at the hearing. According to the prosecution, there is sufficient evidence for the case to continue. The court decided to uphold the previous decision and reject the request for his release.

The “constructive” role of the PSE in a White Albania

position, it demonstrates the recruitment of almost the entire former political leadership caste into the “PDSH”, as an industry for recycling the former leadership into social democracy. In this context, the behavior of the representatives of the Italian left toward Albania is incomprehensible. The first emotions of sympathy for a “reformed political force” cannot justify the moral amnesty of the authors of the crimes of the dictatorship. On 14 June 1995 in Vlora, during a meeting with the chairman of PSSH, Vilson Ahmeti, Mr. Piero Fassino and Mr. Giuseppe Frigo left room to understand a kind of sympathy for the initiative to condemn the communist genocide, but at the same time avoided clarifying specific responsibilities. Albania needs truth and justice, not political relativism. Only a clear stance toward the past can help the country build credible institutions and a truly democratic left. 1992 1993 1994 EARLY ELECTIONS EARLY ELECTIONS EARLY ELECTIONS PS 1995 * Votes altornando y l’esser e PSI
