Mr. Pashko’s hypocrisy and privatization
Interview with the Secretary General of the PDSH, Prof. Dr. Tritan Shehu, given to journalist Lorenc Vangjeli
A person who, as the mouthpiece of a group of anti-national manipulators, mercilessly tore apart the Albanian left with a double betrayal for his own interests should at the very least have a sense of shame if he speaks today in the name of the right wing or as its representative. He was Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of a government that signed a pact of national betrayal, which is in complete contradiction with the platform of the Democratic Party and with all the interests of Albania and Albanians. Mr. Pashko has never represented the spirit of the Democratic Party, just as he has always lacked sensitivity for the national question. He remained hostage to his personal ego and his own career, and failed to perceive the fact that democracy functions only thanks to the existence of parties. It may happen that the PDSH makes mistakes, but not that it denies the very reason for its existence. To work to destroy a party and then seek to represent its ideals is to act with hypocrisy and amorality.
That is also the policy he practices, a policy with one foot in the morning on the revolver of privatizations and the other in the evening on social protests and speculation around specific issues, such as that of former political prisoners. Mr. Pashko presents, on the one hand, a clear Western orientation, yet considers the government’s decisions to have been wrong when it refused the offers of Belgrade and Athens for oil. I feel it is excessive to comment on these theses, knowing this schizophrenia of thought. Western in words and Eastern in actions.
Regarding the housing of Kosovars, he says the government was wrong, but he himself was the Foreign Minister who did not upset the Greek and Serbian chauvinists by failing to react when the Greek Foreign Minister, Mr. Papoulias, stated that Kosovar refugees were in Albania with Greek visas. Then, such a policy was continued rigorously by Mr. Pashko even when it was plainly obvious that Belgrade was carrying out ethnic cleansing against the Kosovars. Better than anyone he should know that the Democratic Party is not the 17 deputies of '89, but a mass party with more than 650 thousand members and sympathizers. The PDSH is part of the living organism of the Albanian nation, led by its prominent figures; it is a broad movement that anticipated major democratic developments and successful economic reforms. Although political pluralism, which unfortunately is a new invention in Albania, inevitably bears the stamp of transition and crisis, today’s Albania is not such only because of the PD’s governance. There are also other factors, historical and geopolitical, inherited or arising in response to it. In any case, I am convinced that the direction of reforms by the PDSH has given and will give the country a clearly Western profile.
As for privatization, starting from the fact that Mr. Pashko re-entered market reforms with his opposition to privatization with money, I want to say that it is everyone’s right to express their opinion and to draw out concepts for a market economy with the most humane face possible and necessary. This requires professional and scientific knowledge of market mechanisms, beyond speculation or the temptation to theoretically label subjects or individuals with names, surnames, or ideological inheritance, even if that is the fruit of immature political understanding. In no case can privatization be conceived as a narrow problem of middlemen or the rich. This process is complex, with social costs, but it is necessary for a society aspiring to a market economy. The issue is to build rules and safeguards so that it does not degenerate into abuse.
"Exactly" is a normal EUC procedure. It was signed by me; the request was addressed to President Mariens. It became known in the TECU Council, where Mr. Çeka was also present.
Journalist: That is clear. But what is the further procedure for declaring Kosovo at the presidency? What Mr. Pashko did on the way to Strasbourg?
Secretary General: No, this is by no means unusual. This is a completely normal procedure. Çeka fulfilled a correct role, but we cannot attribute too much to him. It is not his isolated action, but part of a clear political line of the PDSH.

The media prestidigitator (the first executive chief of Tele 2000, Mines Xhaferi, a failed professor of Marxist aesthetics and bullying), has gone beyond the limit of his censorial function and source of disinformation. The man of Justice, of law, imposed by order of the character baptized beforehand as “Belindri,” is trying, with his stylistic manner and his manipulated and propagandistic-recidivist musings, to hide what can no longer be covered with a sieve. I am referring to the official letter of the head of government, Mr. Aleksandër Meksi, addressed to the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Andreas Papandreu, in which he requests an explanation for the number of Albanian citizens killed and wounded, imprisoned and forcibly returned to the border by the Greek police. The Greek state branch is zealously pursuing the objectives of the 12 points, drafted in the offices of anti-Albanian circles in Athens.
Later the article also attacks the reactions to the hunger strike by former political prisoners, the policies toward refugees, and the conduct of the Greek government. In the end the author raises questions about the role of the media and the deliberate distortion of information.

Election campaign with the PD program
The branch of the Democratic Party in the district of Dibra organized on 22 May the first preparatory meeting of the candidates from the second tier of districts for the upcoming 1996 elections.
This meeting was attended by members of the PD in the district, the town of Dibra, groups of specialists and young people. The discussions emphasized the importance of organizational work and the need for a concrete program aimed at winning the upcoming elections.
Question: No one. Can we in one way achieve victory, on what basis will we achieve it? Not at all based on the achievements of the reforms so far, but not by inviting those who want to help us.
The branch leaders stated that although important steps have been taken, victory requires more political and organizational work.
