from whom are denounced
for violence, pressure,
destruction and theft of the
ballot boxes at the polling station.
The perpetrators and organizers
come from the old
party-state structures and
its local apparatus.
Parts of the testimonies speak of
pushing people toward the
polling stations,
control of the vote,
surveillance and threats.
In some cases, party secretaries,
cooperative chairmen, police
employees and activists
are mentioned who acted as a bloc to
ensure the result.
The accounts taken from
citizens and observers
present a picture of
psychological and physical pressure
on voters, before
and after the count.
Orders, lists,
pursuits and open interference
in the commissions are mentioned.
Many of these actions
are linked to the fear that the loss
of power would bring about the
collapse of the old mechanism.
In what follows, the testimonies show
that violence did not end at the
ballot box, but
continued with pursuit,
revenge, dismissal from work
and marginalization of the
people who did not obey the
orders of the activists.
This page brings
fragments from those testimonies, as a
reminder of the way political pressure was exerted in the decisive months
of the transition.
