(Excerpt from the speech of an American guest at an American reception on the occasion of July 4th)
It sounds as though not a comedic pawn, but the person himself. The cynical and malicious eye? Once again to beat up the ruling elite, the institutions, Albanian politics, economic freedom. If the government has made any mistake, it is not that it has not used the force of law against crime, but that it still has not used it enough and as it should. It is enough to analyze the public statements of the chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania as well as those of the other leaders of the parliamentary opposition to understand that the leadership of this party apparently still sees legality as a tool to seize the power it has lost, and not as an indispensable companion of democratic order. Is this a sign of the folly of attacking the new governing elite, of creating a depressive climate and darkening the country’s prospects, of planting in public opinion the widespread idea that in Albania it is not the law that rules, but arbitrariness; the idea that Albania was and remains a country of corruption, manipulation, nepotism, abuse, and gang rule. The reality is completely different. Albania has now entered a new phase of development and of consolidating the democratic state. We are still in difficulties, but we have a clear course toward modern institutions, toward a market economy and toward integration into Europe. Criticism is necessary, but not nihilism. The current opposition has the right to criticize the government, but it has no right to despise everything that has been built with great sacrifices during these years. Primitive concepts of politics cannot move the country forward.
